Blake Pov.
"How was the meeting," Jake asks walking into my office as if he owns the place.
I tore my eyes from the paper and acknowledged him.
His attire was pretty casual, black shirt, and baggy pants. His dirty blond hair was the same as always, unkempt and messy. He looked liked he'd just got out of bed.
My words fall out plainly, "A bore,"
He sits on my couch in the corner of the room and places his feet on the counter, making himself comfortable.
If it had been someone else who had done that I might have shot them on the spot.
"What brings you here."
"Nothing important just wanted to hear about the meeting."
I redirected my gaze to the documents dismissively.
"Like I told you, nothing special."
"Come on, let me in." He persists.
"There's nothing to tell."
"What's her name, how old is she?"
"Allison Carter, age 20, sheltered child, no boyfriends, no work employment. Brought up by her mother and father, John and Lisa Carter."
"If you want to know anything else, her file is on the table," I motion toward for the file in the yellow folder on the table near him.
He picks up the folder and looks through it before putting it back down.
"You know that's not what I meant."
"I know." With Jake there was always more.
"How was she, is she beautiful?"
"Average."
"Come on. You say that about every girl."
"Whatcha think of her?"
I sighed knowingly. He wasn't going to let up until I gave him the answer he wanted.
I let the pen fall from my hands as I leaned back in my chair. I shut my eyes and rubbed my temple.
The image of her standing with her face held down as her hands shook was clear in my mind.
"Small. Frantic. She looked terrified of me."
"I bet." He said while laughing.
I open my eyes and stared at him annoyed.
There was something about her that was unnerving.
"Did you talk to her?" He says pulling me away from my thoughts.
"More like I was doing all the talking. Apparently, she got into an accident and got injured, and now she is a mute."
"Really, and you're still planning on going through with it."
"It doesn't matter to me."
"Quite frankly it's better, I don't need any annoying nuisances in my life. All she has to do is stay and live quietly for the duration of the year. And then she is free to go."
"You might be surprised, she might start growing on you." He says from what I believe is experience.
His girlfriend of two years, Maddie, was an informant of mines who provided me with intel on people who stops by at my bar.
I had a lot of enemies who tried to mask themselves as my partners. So I needed someone from outside my circle to get me information. Maddie had been one of them.
