"No." Dad says as he stares at me like I just told him that I ran over a beaver.
"Why not?"
"I don't trust her."
"Oh my god!"
"Mel, go to your room."
My hands drop to my side as I run to my room. All I asked was if I could take Lizzi shopping.

I watch her out my window. Does she sleep outside?

My mind starts to wander. Right back to a memory.

"Melissa. Santa won't come if you don't go to sleep." My mom says as she tucks me in bed.
She gives me a soft smile that makes me feel alive.

She closes my door and I hear muffled voices:

"Sally. You can't just lie to her."
"She's six."
"I know but what if santa doesn't come."
"Marikay, I swear to god."
"What?"
"Just shut up."
"Sally."
"Goodnight, Marikay."

I had woken up around ten to notice Mom's car. It was gone.

I walked into Dad's room to find him crying on the floor.

She left.
She left.
She left.
She left us .

"I hate her." I say outloud.

Dad appears at my doorway.

"You hate her? Huh?"

"Dad!" I scream.

"It's cool. She's hard to hate but easy to miss." Dad says, sitting next to me.
"Why did she leave?"
"I don't know. Didnt she leave you a note?"
"Yeah."
"Well have you read it?"
"No."
Dad takes one look at me and sighs.

"You can go."

I look back up at him.
"With Lizzi?"
"Yes."
I grin and give him a hug.
He smiles.
"Thank you!"
"God Mel, you're welcome but be safe."
He walks out of my room and I get up and go through my drawers. I find the note.

I slip it in my pocket then I run down the hall and out the door.
