You have got to be kidding me, you swallow back the words in your mind as your eyes trail over the exterior gate of the Avengers tucked away headquarters. How Mourney had this address so readily available, you don't want to know. The thought slowly dims from your mind as your sight travels over the ebony metal gate that's plastered with a large medallion of the Avengers 'A' centered on the front. There's just a small glimpse of the main headquarters building tucked away to the back corner of the acreage. One thing you've never noticed within the confines of NYC is how abundantly green grass can truly grow, and the way it was endlessly expansive across the plot of land.
"Name." A voice with a low tone British accent rippled from a speaker, and even that catches your attention. It's not like you'd expect, it's not crackly and distorted like that of the McDonald's drive-thru speaker, but clear and crisp, as if the man was practically standing at your window. It takes only but a second until you notice the tiny lens of the camera above the speaking retracting then expanding to focus over your features.
"Oh- y/n, from the NYPD detective branch." You briefly hesitate, as if you're unsure of your own name and job title as if you haven't had it for the past nearly seven years. There's a deafening silence for a few seconds, what feels like eternity before the nearly robotic voice springs to life(?) once again.
"You will find Mr. Rogers and Ms. Romanov awaiting you near the side entrance of the headquarters building. Hard to miss." With that, the voice cuts off suddenly, with no other additional notes.
Your features twist for a moment, bewildered as you raise a hand in silent question, parting your lips to speak. But your thoughts are quickly interjected by the silent click of the lock on the gate coming free and the doors gradually opening outwards towards the drive approaching the exquisite glass-building afore you. Okay then , you reach for the gear shift, moving your car forward into drive as a large exhale leaves from your lips, to Captain America and Black Widow.
It almost seems unreal, like a fantasy if you will. The Avengers are commonplace in the world now, but to actually wrap the mind around supernatural power, superpowers, it still seems unreal. Your teeth hook onto your bottom lip in nervous anticipation as your tires track through the loose gravel leading upwards to the paved pathway that wraps around the headquarters.
"Well, shit ," you whisper shyly under your breath. There's a redhead situated by the doorway; arms folded tightly against her chest. Her hair is braided sloppily, but still pristine- if that makes any sense. Your eyes follow her features, they're relaxed but suspicious as she too is looking over your vehicle and now you through the window shield. But it doesn't stop you from realizing how casual she looks above all. When you pictured ' Black Widow' you'd expect a leather jumpsuit and weapons at hand, but she was quite the opposite. She wore a white, loose fitted low-neck t-shirt that looked as if it had been washed one too many times and a pair of faux black leather pants that clung to her physique.
"Welcome, y/n." Her voice is low, but comforting, and her lips even pull into a loose smile, flashing her teeth briefly. You offer a soft smile as your car lurches to a halt, and for a moment you're embarrassed to even be driving merely a Honda in their present. For God's sake, they had a spaceship situated atop the building when you drove up, and you were driving a beat up 2017 Accord.
"Thank you..." you hesitate, as if it sounds completely unrealistic to say, "Black Wi-"
"Nat will do," she cuts you off with a look of short amusement, flashing another grin of satisfaction. You feel your cheek flush over in warmth and you have to shudder past the butterflies that turn in your stomach. These were the Avengers after all, these were supposed to be the people that were going to take this case out from under you, and suddenly the butterflies recoil to a soft pit of anger again.
Your thoughts slowly ebb as a dirty-blonde male appears through the glass doorways as they part automatically at his approach. He immediately brings his arms to cup behind his back, straightening his posture to almost appear regale, regimented. He offers a tight smile, with only the right corner of his lips ticking up into a smile. Captain America .
"Welcome to the Avengers Headquarters, y/n." He nods, remaining stoic with his lips pulled into a half-smile. He seems slightly more composed than Natasha, with not even a stray baby hair out of place on his head. His shirt is a plain navy tee, but he keeps it tucked beneath his pants that's adorned in a navy green army belt that looks as if it was taken from a Novelty Army shop.
"Thank you, Steve." You muster, as you finally are able to press yourself free of the seatbelt and kill the ignition to your car. He acts as if he is still in the army, as if he is the head of the entire operation. Yet, everywhere you look you see Tony Stark's, Iron Man's, name plastered in association with Avengers.
"Mm- so you get Steve , I get Black Widow ." Natasha interrupts humorously between the introductions as you step free of your vehicle and push the door shut behind you with a brisk thud . Your keys rattle briefly as you shove them mindlessly into the back pocket of your jeans. The red-head looks you over once again and offers a reassuring smile, which you do your best to return before Steve is interjecting once again.
"Follow me, Detective Y/N." Steve proceeds, before he is turning on his heel and letting his arms fall back to his sides as he continues towards the entrance where he'd previously emerged from. A crooked smile of sarcasm meets your lips, his stoicism being a bit of nuisance above all. He acted nearly as if he were superior already, maybe he was, but it was already giving you a sour taste in your mouth. If this was going to progress anywhere though you had to play fairly and nicely. There was one positive amongst all this, you were technically about to meet a form of celebrities. The one and only Avengers.
"Ignore him, he'll warm up," Natasha's voice broke through your thoughts, her half-hearted smile brought one back to your features. "He thinks he's still a Private in the Army sometimes when it comes to new people." A faint laugh comes from her throat as she strides past you to meet at Steve's side as you step into the back entry-way of the headquarters. You feel your eyes linger over her briefly, and you clench your jaw in irritation of your own actions.
"Watch out[owt]!" A sharp voice seemingly stings worse than the body that's stumbled into that of your own. There's a tinge of a Russian accent laced into the warning as you fumble over that of your own words, and you hear the faint clatter of your badge meet the ground.
Bitch .
Before you can even express your apologies, the young brunette has already shrugged past you and exited the building in a huff, hands to the air before collapsing at her sides. All you catch is a tinge of faint red streaks lingering on the door before dispersing as if it were smoke. That door was automatic, was there really a need? You question mentally, but defeatedly turn to bend down and retrieve your badge, only to meet Natasha halfway.
"Wanda Maximoff." She states, passing over the silver badge into the palm of your hand.
"Pardon?" You question Natasha baffled, re-attaching the metal piece to the waistline of your jeans.
"That would be Wanda Maximoff... if you think Steve takes a while to warm up to," she clicks her tongue with a tilt of her head which makes her red braid fall over her opposite shoulder, "you have another thing coming, y/n, with getting through to her. But trust me, she's a good person. Just a tough start." She offers a wink and a slight laugh that's more of a short breath before following ahead with Steve again.
Ah yes , Wanda Maximoff , the young 16-year-old girl that the Avengers converted while in Sokovia from enemy to colleague. The attitude may have been expected, but not necessarily warranted especially now given she was 20 years old. You definitely were left with a disapproving taste in your mouth for her now, short-tempers were not keen to you and Maximoff seemingly fit the bill for that. The Avengers were not starting off on a positive note.
Well- maybe Natasha Romanov was.
