I look in the mirror again. My auburn hair falls in front of my face and I tie it back in a typical braid. Today is a hunting day, to gather meat for my family. I leave the house, grabbing my knives and placing them in my belt. The wind is cold and the sun bright. Perfect. The quiet village of Coba Bari looked like something from a fairytale, the kind that are a children's roost. I climb a nearby tree, waiting with the knife in my hand tilted so there was no glint. Then I saw it: a deer, stupidly standing in my line of sight. A hand was slowly raised, and before it was aware of my presence it was dead. Springing down from the tree, I removed the carcass and began to drag it home. My family was waiting for me. By the time I got there everyone was fully awake. Father took the deer to be skinned while Mareni cleaned the knife. I looked at the envelope on the table outside the house, Mina Myra, my name, carelessly scrawled  across its cover. I grabbed it and wandered to my room, falling back onto my bed. The letter inside read:
Dearest Mina, I invite you to come and join me as a thief's apprentice in the city of Ravf Feroz. I know you know where that is. I'll hope to see you in a week. In the lower district. You'll know the place.
My heart pounded against my chest. A city apprenticeship. For me, a 16 year old Elfini. I ran into the kitchen and handed my father the letter. His smile was grim. "Pack your bag, you'll be leaving tonight".
I hugged him and ran off to get ready. Ravf Feroz, here I come!
A/N- children's roost is Elfini slang for a waste of time.
