"You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness."

In this cruel world there were only three different ranks of people. The Iwari, who were the common folk and slaves. They made up most of the population and were treated the worst. Then there was the Lowari, which consisted of all of the nobles. Lastly there was the Zi, which was the royal family. Anne was a part of the Iwari and although she wasn't sure what rank Azai was, she knew he had to be high ranking.

It had been 10 years since that last time she saw Azai. Anne was now seventeen, and a high ranking official in the army. She was gifted with rare magic, and that was the only reason she was in the army. Negation, that was the type of magic Anne possessed. She could cancel out other magic abilities. Of course this power is useless against a normal human, but it was deadly during war. But even with all of that power Anne could not change her lineage. No matter what she would still be an Iwari. Born to a loving family where her mother was a baker and her father worked in the fields. She had a younger brother named Pier, who she loved more than anything else and she even had a black cat named Einx. Even with all of this she wasn't happy, she wasn't satisfied. Something was missing and Anne has spent her whole life searching for it.

Anne was tired from her work. She was in the barracks and had just gotten home from a mission hours before. In all honesty she was exhausted. None of her wanted to get up, but she had to.

There had been more raids in the western district, and even one girl was killed in the crossfire. If this news spread to the high priest... she didn't even want to think about that. Anne had a meeting scheduled in 2 hours which was followed by lunch with the princess. Yes the Princess Octovia Vi Demosan the 2nd who was 4th in line for the throne, was in fact her friend.

That was probably the only reason why Anne was the commander of intelligence. She loved her job and it pained her that she may have not got the job fairly. Everyday it ate away at her a little to know that there was someone more deserving of her position.

So with the unwelcomed weight on her shoulder Anne made her way down to the Cafeteria.

On her way their Anne ran head first into Tani who was accompanied by her assistant George. All of the contents in Tani's hands were split and Anne immediately started to apologize.

"Oh heavens what have I done! Please forgive me Tani I didn't see you."

The tall girl with long black hair said, "Nene don't fret Georgy will get it."

"Always with the eccentrics." Anne responded with a laugh.

"Now come lets leave boring George here and we can go to dinner together." While weaving a hand through her arm.

Tani Williams was the head in the research company. A few years back she created a serum that had healed the Queen, so forever since she was allowed to create whatever she wanted. Tani was an eccentric girl with long black hair that she had streaked with gold chains. Anne was in fact one of the youngest girls in the barracks so naturally she was a couple of years Tani's junior.

"Darling have you heard the news?" Tani asked, disrupting Anne's thoughts.

"No what is it?"

"Ah never mind if you haven't heard yet there must be a reason."

Annie then whined "Oh come on please tell me." as they turned into the large cafeteria.

"No"

And that was the end of the conversation. Before Anne even thought to follow the heavenly smell wafting from the food caught her attention. Thick rich bread, creamy chowder soup, crisp fish, and eggs were laid out with a long line cutting the foods from her view.

Looking at the long line Anne scowled. She couldn't simply skip the line, it wouldn't look good. So sadly Anne trekked towards the end of the line. But before she could reach it a young man's voice called out and said, "Anne! Anne up here."
