"So how was last night with Marcus?" Maxine asked and gave her best friend a knowing look as the two of them walked into AP English together and went to their usual spots in the middle of the classroom next to each other
Adira rolled her eyes playfully at her best friend "we went down to the skatepark" Adira said with a smile as she thought about the night before and all of the fun that her and Marcus Baker had, her heart warmed at the thought of him and she couldnt help but smile even wider
Maxine let out a scoff and then fake gagged "uhh Boring, come on give us the goss" Maxine said and rolled her shoulders around with a giant grin on her face
"there is no goss Max" Adira said with a laugh and Maxine sighed softly and then pouted that her friend wasnt telling her more, but when she thought about it, she was glad she didnt know about 'that side' of their relationship, considering it was her brother and her best friend
"welcome back AP English" their English teacher suddenly called and everyone quickly stopped talking and all of them made their way back to their seats, not wanting to get into any trouble, "hiding in the back there, you will find our new student, Virginia Miller. I trust you will make her feel welcome," the man called to the class as everyone sat down.
Adira looked over at the new girl who awkwardly placed her bag down next to the desk, Adira turned to Maxine with a big grin on her face, "well I doubt he is gonna make her feel welcome, being the racist misogynistic asshole that he is," she muttered and Maxine nodded her head with a grin, knowing that she was right.
"It's Ginny," the new girl called out, clearly not a fan of the full name that she had been given when she was born. However, it was obvious that the teacher didn't care as he completely ignored her and went on with what he was going to talk about in the first place
"Now, I know that it is our first day back from summer vacation, but I thought it was an excellent opportunity for a pop quiz." Maxine and Adira rolled their eyes and let out a long sigh, Maxine hadn't done it and Adira had read about half of the book before Marcus got too needy and had thrown it to the side of his room where she never bothered to pick it up from again.
"Now those of you who didn't do the summer reading of the Cruciable, are in for a world of pain," their English teacher told the class, well aware of the fact that there would be multiple people in the class who hadn't done it, even if they were in the AP class
"Uh don't worry Virginia, I don't expect you to have read it," the teacher said to the girl in the back, showing an ounce of kindness to the new girl who was sitting silently, looking like she was going to be sick.
The girl then rolled her eyes and stuck her hand up in the air dramatically, "yes do you have a question?" the man asked her
"Yes, there are 16 books on this syllabus." Virginia stated
"Yes, like I said, you can drop down," the teacher informed her. Everyones attention had now been drawn between the new girl and the teacher who had clearly not caught on to the sarcasm and attitude radiating off the 15 year old
"14 of them are written by men, 15 were written by white people, and I am willing to make a guess that the one black author will crop up for Black History month," Ginny stated, clearly unhappy with the syllabus for the class
People around the class shared amused looks and Maxine and Adira's interests had been piqued so much that they shared a knowing look before turning back to look over at the new girl, Virginia Miller who finished with, "am I right?"
"Excuse me?" The teacher asked with a scowl on his face as he looked down at the student who had talked back to him on her very first day
"I am very serious about my education, Mr Gitten," the girl finished, a proud smirk on her face as she looked up at the balding white man who was standing up at the front of the classroom, looking like he wanted to kick her out of his classroom right then and there. "I am worried I might internalize an ideology that the main viewpoint, the viewpoint worth studying in class, the viewpoint of the greats, is only that of the white male, thus eradicating my voice as immaterial."
Max and Adira snorted softly in their seats, proud looks on their faces, "and therefore I am worried that I wont be stimulated intellectually," she says and there are a round of snickers throughout the classroom, "Also I have read the Cruciable, and I am confident that I can take the pop quiz today."
"Are you quite through Virginia?" The teacher asked, looking more and more pissed off as the seconds passed them by
"Well this is going to be good," Adira muttered to Maxine who nodded her head with a knowing smirk on her lips
"No." she says and then leans forwards on her desk, placing her chin delicately on top of her hands, "please call me Ginny."
"Well I don't know how things were done at your last school, Ginny, but here, we don't tolerate political outbursts and grandstanding at the expense of your peers classtime," the teacher spat out and gestured to all of the children sitting around the room who were beyond amused at this point
Maxine and Adira both raised their hands quickly "yes you two?" the teacher asked, he had been teaching the two of them long enough to know that this was probably going to just annoy him more, but as a teacher he did have an obligation to allow them to speak.
Max was the first to speak up, a giant smirk on her face, "Hi! I'm like, also super concerned about my subconscious digestion of the superiority of the white male perspective. And also, I have period cramps, so can I go to the nurse?"
Adira then opened her mouth to speak but the teacher cut her off, "okay that's it, I don't want to hear anything from you. For the rest of the class, we will be silent and take the pop quiz. Its worth 10 per cent of your first semester grade," the teacher exclaimed
"Well somebody has got their knickers in a twist hey?" Adira whispered to Ginny, motioning over to the teacher, "I'm surprised he hasn't completely cracked the shits," she said with a small snort
Ginny looked confused as she looked over at the girl. Maxine leaned over with a proud, wide grin on her face, "She's Aussie, don't worry you will get to the weird shit that comes out of her mouth eventually."
Adira shoved Maxine playfully, "Piss off Maxy," Adira said with a small grin as she rolled her eyes
"Adira and Maxine, one more word from either of you this lesson and I will have to send you to the principles office," The teacher scolded them as he walked around the classroom and handed out the papers to everyone, stopping and giving the three girls a harsh look as he handed them theirs
