The morning of Quidditch tryouts, I had finished all of my black pudding.
My other roommate, Alicia Spinnot, had woken up at the crack of dawn. I had not properly spoken to her yet, but a quick summary would be that she has the same Quidditch enthusiasm as Katie, but is perfectly sweet. Anyways, it wasn't her clanking in the bathroom that woke me up, it was Katie's snoring.
By the time I got back from breakfast, she was still asleep. I nudged her slightly, and she whined and grumbled something to me. Her mouth fell open once again to let out a huff.
Alicia came back with our uniforms. She handed me one and stared at the motionless Katie. "You think we'll have to change her diaper too?"
"Katie, you will be late for Quidditch." I shook her shoulder.
She suddenly sat up with wide eyes. "Quidditch!!!!" She screamed and practically spat in my face while throwing the covers off of her body and running into the bathroom.
-"Quidditch is a real high maintenance sport," Fred told me, though I wished he'd stop talking all together.
"I know how to play Quidditch, Carrot top."
This made him stop talking. He pressed his lips together, lifted his broom to his shoulder, and ran into the mob of students on the field.
Angelina blew her whistle violently, which made the mob lose their madness. I stood beside Katie and Alicia.
"It's Ron's first year trying out," Katie said, but her tone was very bland.
I looked at Ron who gripped his broom firmly. Perhaps it was to show confidence, but while he stood next to Harry, you could tell how fidgety he actually was.
"It is also mine."
"Yes, but you've got experience," she claimed. "Ron's just so..."
"Alright we'll start with some flying drills." Angelina pointed towards a group of boys to her left and told them to get on their brooms. We waited for her signal to mount our brooms.
I hadn't noticed how cloudy it was until I was in the air. The fog consumed me almost immediately, and I had to squint to see where I was going. It was not long until I realized that Angelina was making this into a real game of Quidditch.
The snitch hovered around me and I blinked with confusion. It seemed to be following me around. Using this to my advantage, I started to fly towards Harry, who I knew to be trying out for the seeker's position. However, the snitch figured out my plan and zoomed off to the other direction.
I tried to clear my vision a bit, searching for the quaffle. I didn't see it, but I did see a giant bludger plummeting in my direction. Without much time to think, I had somehow spun upside down, and the bludger missed me by a hair.
Flying drills were much different in France.
When I was flipped right side up, I spotted the quaffle, but also saw Fred and George grinning near some bludgers.
Could they take anything seriously?
I rolled my eyes and took the quaffle with me towards the goal. Ron was trying out for the keeper position, but his broom position was not very good. He was wobbling around without paying attention to any of his surroundings. This made throwing the quaffle in very easy, and I was able to do it many times. However, Ron unintentionally blocked one of my shots quickly. This gave him a sense of confidence, and he was able to block Katie's shot as well.
Katie gave me a look of surprise, and I shrugged my shoulders before Angelina blew her whistle, summoning us back to the ground.
I had not seen her flying by, but I could tell she was watching as her hair was tossed around and she was sweating like the rest of us.
"Results will be posted tomorrow."
-"Wands away please!"
It's like a cycle. I seemed not to be the only one sick of it.
"Harry got words engraved into his skin because of this old toad," Katie whispered.
"What?" I simply did not understand what she meant.
"I heard from the fifth years. She makes you literally carve letters into your hand if you don't listen."
I blinked with disbelief. "Is it true?"
Katie shrugged. "I wouldn't put it past her."
And when classes ended that day, we found that Katie was right. Harry was surrounded by kids in the common room, staring at his hand that read, in fresh blood, 'I must not tell lies.'
"Deserves it, I say. For what shit comes out of his mouth," said a fifth year, Seamus Finnagan, walking behind us unknowingly.
Katie groaned. "Some people can just be so stupid."
"What does he mean?"
She pursed her lips, trying to form words to say. "Well I guess a lot of people don't believe him. You know, for what happened last year."
It was crazy how the news was covered up for the rest of the world. Everyone seemed to know except for me.
"Actually, I do not-"
"Surprised she didn't carve anything into you, Dupont," Fred said. When we both looked at him blankly, he added, "because you failed your exams."
"She didn't fail, you piece of carrot shit!" Katie exclaimed and rolled her eyes. "She didn't even take them!"
I kept my mouth shut because anything I would've said to him would have been much worse.
Katie grabbed my arm and started towards the dormitories. "He's not even funny."
