I stared at my dress choices hoping one would be perfect. I packed very little and the two I was deciding between were either too little or too much. I got up and opened ny closet door to find a closet full of outfits my size. I was speechless. I went straight to the ball gowns and I picked the color I wanted. Red. French ladies never tone down their assets. I slipped it on and proceeded to shoes. Sadly even in heels I was barely 5'7.
I took a deep breath and left the room, masquerade mask covered in black lace over red and beaded around the edges. I descended down the stairs and found myself face to face with him. He didnt have his mask on yet and his eyes trailed over me like I were the only one in the room. His friends were not too shy themselves. I swallowed trying to focus on the steps I was taking. Three, two...
"Miss Leclaire!?" A frantic voice called out and my foot slipped as I tried to see who in the wave of strangers was calling my name. Arms caught me and I stared up at a black silk mask. He held me like that staring into my eyes. His eyes were unforgettable. How could he think I would not notice them under a mask? If he were the son of the Queen it would be unfortunate because we live together and that is improper. He set me upright and I turned to thank him but found myself facing the Queen of England.
"Princess Leclaire?"
"Please, your majesty, to you I am Sophie." I said softly clearly terrified out of my wits.
"Ah, then you may call me Anne, my my your form is impeccable. If you are not first pick I will have a fit! I cannot wait to get to know you and your beautiful self better, as for now I have to find my son. Best of luck on the Choosing."
I curtsied and turned to get a drink when arms wrapped around me and hands found one of mine gripping my waist painfully.
"Why hello." His mask was covered in emerald feathers. "I thought Id make it clear to you who I am. I know every woman here except you... and yet you are the most beautiful. I cannot allow anything less and therefore you will be my choice. And since I choose second..." he grinned and I pushed at him.
"Stop it." I said softly at first.
"You will be mine and I will show you off to my companions. Thinknof the beautiful children we could make." I shoved him harder but he didnt budge.
"I am not a possesion. Nor am I ever going to be am object to flaunt around. I do not want you and-" A hand tapped the man's back and suddenly I was swooped away into stronger arms, yet soft holding me. I glanced up and saw the green eyes I knew too well already. He was tall and my hand rested on his shoulder as he interlocked our fingers pulling me closer as he led me around the dance floor. I slid my hand up to his neck.
"You know... I get to pick first." He said softly and my eyes shot from the floor to his face. I smiled softly at this and he tried to hide his smile looking away from me.
"How unfortunate." I murmered.
"Unfortunate? I would have thought lucky." He twirled me and I swung back in making our bodies collide and he didnt let me move an inch.
"Only if you get who you're looking for." I said softly.
"I thought I had." He replied easily. The song ended and he bowed kissing my hand for far longer than necessary.
"For now." I said and he glanced up at me. This was the second time he'd rescued me. I felt him smile against my hand and then turn to leave. I found myself wishing he'd stayed.
