When Loki was dying, I knew straight away.

It was about 11 am and I was still out for the count (what can I say, I like sleep). I was in one of those really deep sleeps where you don't dream of anything when I suddenly woke up... but not in my room.

It appeared that I was floating in a pitch black space only illuminated by me... glowing? Staring down at my hands, I looked like some sort of radioactive angel, oozing green light. Needless to say, I was slightly freaked out.

Okay, I'm lying. I was scared shitless.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" I called out into the darkness, not expecting a response.

"My dear child." came a voice from the gloom. A voice that had comforted me as a crying toddler. A voice that had laughed with me as an upbeat child. A voice that had argued with me as a sullen teenager... a voice I recognized immediately.

"Loki? Is that you? Where are we?" I replied, voice shaking with uncertainty. Suddenly, Loki materialized in front of me, dressed in full Asgardian attire, glowing a pale, flickering gold. Around his neck I was shocked to see hand prints, as if someone had strangled him.

He smiled.

"Ever the observer. Clearly, I've taught you well." He floated closer to me and I could see myself reflected in the apple green of his eyes.

"W-Why are you here? W-What is happening?" I stuttered, unsure of what I was seeing.

Loki sighed.

"I know you have many questions," he said solemnly, "but I can't answer them, now or ever. I need you to find the answers yourself. Only then will you learn what it truly is to be a god."

I gulped.

"Yes, that's right - bit of a shock, I know. You see, I am currently being strangled to death by a purple alien WWE champion. Thanos, his name is. He's coming to kill half of the universe. Not the way I'd personally go about universal domination, but I'm not a life size prune. Unfortunately, despite the Avengers best efforts, he will win, half of all life will seize to exist and the universe will enter a period of time known to survivors as the Blip -"

"Okay this is a lot but is that seriously what they're gonna call it? Wtf is the Blip?" I interrupted.

Loki stared at me.

"Sorry, serious moment, end of the world as we know it, please continue." I said quickly.

"As I was saying... after the Blip, in about 5 years, the remaining gang will do some messed up time travel shenanigans - which I must say, is quite impressive - and they will fix everything again. So nothing to worry about. But the important thing is that I'm giving you my godly powers because it's not as if I can use them in Valhalla... and I believe you can use them for the greater good - even if I was unable to." he finished, quietly.

After a moment of thought, I responded.

"So... you're really gonna die on me? Just when you make me a god? Thanks for that."

Loki chuckled.

"You always did use humour to deflect from your true feelings. Admittedly, that may be my fault, but still."

I sighed. There was no point pretending with him. He could read me (and everyone else for that matter) like a book.

"Am I ever even going to see you again?"

"Perhaps... I'm still figuring a few alternate timeline theories out. There may be a chance... but I wouldn't want to get your hopes up. And depending on how far back this moment is, my past self may not even know of your existence."

My eyes clouded and I looked away. His golden aura flickered precariously.

"It appears I am running out of time. I know we've never been good at talking about feelings but... but I need you to know that... I love you. Endlessly."

I gazed back at him, already fading into oblivion.

"Ditto dad. Ditto."

He smiled and vanished.

Only his golden glow remained, which swirled towards me and spiralled around me, mixing green with gold and gold with green.
