- Jenna Porter: Protagonist. Blonde, gray-blue eyes and flaky pale skin. Has athsma. Grade 10, nicknamed Flakes. Has moved around with her aunt and uncle and younger cousin. Born in Siirena but is now in California attending Seaside Academy.
- Kayla Coolidge: Red haired best friend of Jenna. Friendly, on school newspaper always looking for an exciting story. Full of school spirit and a huge over-achiever. Defensive of her friends.
- Jason West: "Bad boy" who initially bullies Jenna. Turns out to be Jenna's neighbor and she sees that he has an abusive dad. They come to an understanding. Maybe he protects Jenna at some point. Likes Jenna.
- Eric Grace: Friends with everyone, easily class president. His father is principal and his mom is a high-end real estate mogul. He steals keys to the mansions she sells and throws the best parties at them. Likes Jenna.
-Megan Porter- Jenna's mom who died when Jenna was under 2. Always told the story of meeting a man on vacation and getting pregnant. Jenna doesn't know her dad. Jenna's mom felt a strong connection to Siirena as she was a marine biologist and died by slipping, hitting her head and drowning in one of the larger tanks.
Storyline:
- Jenna meets new friends, gets bullied as usual. A skincare routine recommended by Kayla's mom starts to help Jenna do better (it's just salt water).
-befriends Jason in secret. Helps him with math or something. Gets invited to one of Eric's parties. It goes well until a mean girl shoves Jenna into the pool. She runs off toward the beach and sits on the sand, upset. In the moonlight she sees glowing, glistening scales all over her legs. She's compelled to go to the ocean, where she has always avoided, and gets a full tail.
-She keeps this a secret and sneaks off to swim after this. Her skin condition goes away, her asthma goes away and she becomes suddenly the most beautiful girl at school. Now Eric will do anything to date her but she's not interested.
- Jason is in his boat and sees Jenna swimming through binoculars. He confronts her when she's coming home but promises to keep her secret.
-Kayla is feeling distant after Jenna is becoming secretive and popular. Jenna decides to tell Kayla
- Eric and she get voted King and Queen of the sea for spring fling, and go as a date. He tries to force himself on her (nothing graphic!) and Jason throws him off of her.
-Jenna knows that summer she needs to go to Siirena where it all began. She volunteers for a summer camp to make an excuse to go there. Kayla comes along and so does Jason and Eric. Her first swim there she sees another mermaid. But this one is a merman, and he is much older than she. He is Jenna's dad.
- Jason professes his love for Jenna and they kiss in the moonlight in the ocean. Suddenly his legs become a tail.
-Jenna's dad says that only happens when there is true love.
