What Should Have Been Normal
It was not a day for mayhem. I, Kendra Banks, was at the mall. It was a simple mall, nothing special about it. It was the very definition normal, in fact.
I was there with my two best friends, Sophie and Lacey. Again, perfectly normal. Those two had been my friends since kindergarten when we got put in the same nap-time group. I had known them ever since, and our friendship had survived the years, faced against the odds. We had been called the three musketeers by everyone we knew, and even we had to agree with that. We hardly ever went anywhere without each other, so it was only natural to go to the mall together that faitful day.
No one could have guessed the events to come.
"Sweet sixteen is almost here, Kendra." Sophie said inspecting her manicure. We had all gotten them today, and hers was a bright purple. Sophie, the extra-small blond in our group, was completely in love with the color purple. Last year, she even got purple streaks in her pixie cut hair.
And she was yet again reminding me it was almost my birthday.
Sweet sixteen was always supposed to be the best day of my life; the day I become a woman instead of a girl. Don't get me wrong, I was ecstatic about that. It just seemed like my life was moving a little to fast for me anymore. I just wanted it to slow down so that I could catch it and enjoy my youth while I had it. I had to get over that if I wanted to have any birthday fun. I didn't have much time, either; my birthday was tomorrow.
"So are you going to tell me what you are doing for my birthday?" I asked, not really expecting an answer.
"Why would we tell you that?" Lacey said smiling while not smudging her perfect lip gloss. She was a brunet, small but not as small as Sophie. Her hair was wavy, a look that I'd always wanted. Her brown, beautiful doe eyes helped ensure we were the three prettiest girls in school.
I glared at her. They always went overboard with my birthday. I had always just wanted a normal birthday; one with a couple of friends and a little cake. But no, it was all big and "special". My birthday was bigger than Christmas, with the whole town helping out. It could get old hearing them plan it, and I said so (of course I loved the parties, but it was more fun to act like I couldn't care.)
"Please just let me have a normal party this year guys." They just smiled. It was no use. Sophie and Lacey were one and the same. They loved to shop, like me, and once they were set on something they never stopped.
Sophie finally added. "Plus we got an R.S.V.P yesterday from a very important guest. I'm sure you'll remember him."
My heart stopped for a moment, thinking of the one person I'd surely remember. "Seriously guys who is it?"
"Never tell." Both of them said, in perfect time. The beating in my chest went down, surely I had wrong about who it was. I was about to roll my eyes when...
"Oh no," Sophie yelped.
"What!" Lacey and I replied instantly startled.
"I forgot one of my bags!" she said; her glossed lips parting into a deep frown.
"Sophie!" I said glaring at her. It seemed like she was always forgetting one of her bags. I had never left a bag in my life; I didn't really understand how hard it was to hold a bag!
"Was it at the store with the cute new clerk?" Lacey asked. Then I really did roll my eyes. One of our neighbor's nephews was here for a while, and Lacey had called dibs already.
