Chapter 6
We walked up to the police station, hands just brushing, barely touching . I had not gone into the police station at all in my life, just in the parking lot . Vincent had not been to this one, so we looked around, slightly curious about what we would see .
“So have you been in here a lot,” I teased, but underneath to see what he said .
“Yep, we better go under different names . I’ll be John Clark and you can be,” he paused to think .
“Alice Kingsley, 22 year-old ice cream sales lady.” I said, he laughed .
“Who specifically sells ice cream?”
I shot him an irritated look, but he just looked amused. A police woman I vaguely remembered came up to up. I felt Vincent stiffen. What was that about, I wondered?
“Well hello little girl, you’ve gotten so big. Do you remember me?” This must be Kaylen, Sidney’s friend. Her expression was warm and light, and I realized with a start that it didn't appear at all like someone had been murdered a few hours ago .
I tried to act calm and said like nothing else was wrong, “Hi Kaylen; long time no see, how have you been.” Vincent was on total alert now, saying nothing. He was probably just as freaked out as I was about Kaylen being so calm right after the first murder this town has seem in a very long time .
On the opposite side Kaylen seemed oblivious to Vincent standing there . So I made the first move. "This is Vincent; he's new in town." Kaylen looked at him, as if she was seeing him for the first time. She seemed to soften up when she realized I wasn’t .
"Sorry I was being like that, Vincent. Please call me Kaylen. It’s just your uncle left a… interesting impression on us.” I looked at Vincent . He gave a weak smile .
“He’s eccentric, but he’s been there for me since I was a little kid . He’s a good guy . ” He smiled too weakly for himself . I smiled back amused . He was embarrassed by his uncle . We walked up to the front office . There were police men and woman as far as the eye could see . I expected it to look like something you would see on TV, but it wasn't like that at all . It was more disorganized and messy . There were people who looked like they’d pulled all nighters here . One of which would be Sidney .
“Are you ok?” Sidney came over and asked. I had a feeling I would get a lot of those in the next couple of days. I nodded. Sidney turned to Vincent. “I am assuming you are Vincent Anderson. Welcome to West Bound, Arizona; the happiest town in the whole state.” At least Vincent seemed calmer around Sidney.
Sidney was the chief of police in West Bound. A crime like this was very rare in a town this small. There were just over 3,000 people here. Most of the residents were children or teens. Not a lot of suspects for a crime. There were hardly ever any new people in this town, so there would be a lot of commotion tomorrow at school. That was, or course, if I was even willing to go. “I didn’t forget about your birthday. ” Sidney removed a small box from behind her back. “Happy Birthday,” I took the box, shocked. I was having a party today to, if they didn’t cancel it . “Me and a couple of others decided to keep the murder to ourselves until after your birthday. You’re having such a nice party.” I would have been less shocked if she’d said a purple duck killed Sophie. Ok, maybe that was an exaggeration, but still it shocked me. I wanted to argue with Sidney , maybe even yell at her . I would have if I thought it would have done me any good. Sidney wasn’t the kind of person that was yelled at; she was the person that yelled at you .
After a few moment hesitations, I took the package. “Well, open it,” Sidney said. I did, carefully taking off the paper then opening the small box . It was the cutest pair of bunny earrings I had ever seen. I had wanted a pair for a long time. When I was eleven years old I had a bunny named Patch; he was a great pet to me . He lived a long bunny life until recently last year. All the while I had been looking for a pair of bunny earrings.
“Oh, these are so cute.” I looked at Vincent. He smiled, like seeing me happy made him happy too. After this long day a little thing seemed so normal. I hugged her.
“I’m glad you like them.” Her smile revealed that .
“I guess I need to get Kendra a nice present before tonight.” I looked at him. He meant for the party. He would be my date; I knew that right away .
It all was so natural. I looked at him and he nodded. I looked back at Sidney who was glancing between us .
“Do you guys have a silent way of communicating?” Sidney asked . I almost burst out laughing. Vincent cracked a smile. On any other day I’d be laughing so hard I’d be crying. Instead I came to remember why I was here. I was here because one of my oldest friends was dead and the guy I was standing next to had hisblood on her hands, literally.
“Do you need to get statements from us?” I asked. Warm hearted Sidney put on a work face.
“Of course; would you kids want to be interrogated together or separately?”
“Together,” we said at the same time. Sidney looked at us and shook her head smiling. We walked to a room that had an A on the door.

“Mr. Anderson why were you out at the back of the mall.” Sidney was the best cop I knew. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t know a lot of cops. I only knew how seriously she took her job; she could go from a friend to a cop in seconds.
“I was in a store, I’m sorry I can’t remember the name. It was one of the bigger clothing stores . Anyway, I was taken by the arm, a gun put to my head. Next thing I knew I had a bag over my head. The man’s voice said I’d be dead if I tried to escape. I was out until I heard a girl try to get away and a gun.”
“You did not try to help?”
“My arms were tied. I had only just got them undone before Kendra came.”
“Did you know the victim?”
“No.” He said his face showing nothing.
“Did you kill the victim?”
“No.” His face or a small corner of his mouth twitched. Why did it twitch? He had nothing to hide did he? No, I’m imagining things. I had to be.
“Ms. Banks, why were you at the mall?” I was started out of my train of though, loosing it shortly after it had begun .
“I was with Sophie and Lacey shopping for my birthday.”
“Did you know the victim?”
“Yes, she was my best friend.”
“Why were you at the back of the mall?” That erased all thoughts of Vincent’s twitch from my mind. Here was the hard part . I didn’t know. I honestly didn’t know why I was there. I did something I never thought I’d do, I lied to a police officer.
“I heard her calling and ran to her .” Sidney nodded. Poor Sidney, she didn’t suspect a thing.
“Do you need us for anything else; we’ve had a really long day.” Sidney looked as if she just realized everything we’d been through.
“No, please go; have fun.” I saw all the sympathy in her eyes. We walked out hand and hand.
