Now I'm sure I'm dreaming. A telapathic cat?

Skyler seems to notice my disbelief and says, "You don't believe in the fairytales you read in books?" He winks at me.

I let out a nervous laugh, "That's exactly what they are. Not real. That's why they are called fairytales."

"Well, you just got a taste of reality, little lady."

"This is ridiculous-"

"Enough!" The cat's voice runs through my head again, interrupting me. "We don't have time for this. The mist I have brought on will slow them down but you must leave now. I will help you." The mist she has brought on?

As she finishes speaking, she runs to the left side of the car and Skyler opens the door and lets her jump in. She climbs across his lap, placing herself between the two of us.

As Skyler begins to drive again, Auggie asks the cat, "Why are you helping us?"

"Let's just say those creatures and I are not on friendly terms. Plus, I am on your side." She says, glancing at me, then back to the boys. What does she mean by "your" side?

"Wait,"I interrupt. "You can all hear her?" I look at all the boys and they nod their heads. "How?"

"I am able to let only one person hear me, but right now I am allowing all four of you to hear me." Answers the cat. I shake my head, still not believing any of this.

"Okay, let's just say all of this is real, which it is not, who is after us and why?" I say.

"We can't tell you yet. It's not a good idea. The less you know right now, the better." Skyler explains.

"What? No, I want to kno-" My sentence is interrupted by Tyler gasping. I turn to look back at him and the terrified look in his eyes makes my stomach turn with fear.

"What is it?" Auggie demands.

The distant look in Tyler's eyes seems to return to normal and after a moment he replies, "One of them is running ahead of us. He's going to try to cut us off." He says in a rush.

Now more confused than I was two minutes ago, I ask, "Tyler... How do you know that?" Unsurprisingly, I don't get an answer. Skyler speeds up his driving and my chest pounds.

The clouds in the sky grow darker as we continue to speed home and I smell the rain before it pounds onto the windshield. I begin to recognize the area after a few minutes longer and I know we are getting close to the house. Suddenly, I get a tingling feeling from my toes, up to my stomach that gives me goosebumps, making me nervous and excited at the same time. I've never felt anything like that in my life.

"What is that?" I wonder, not realizing I said it out loud.

Skyler quickly looks over at me, wide eyed, "You can feel that?" He smiles.

"What... Is it something bad?" Everyone giggles at this question, which makes me mad.

"What's so funny?" I ask, getting annoyed.

Skyler laughs, keeping his eyes on the road. "It's just, for someone who doesn't believe in magic, you sure did feel it easily just now." I stare at him with a blank look for a moment until I realize what he's talking about.

"Wait, are you saying that... That feeling that just went through me, it was magic?" This day just keeps getting crazier as it goes.
"

Yes, well, it's more of a sense that something or someone with magic abilities is near," the cat begins, "But that was not the feeling of good magic." When she finishes speaking I wonder to myself, how can you tell the difference?

I am about to ask what she means by this when something flashes out of the corner of my eyes and I turn my head to see the shape of a wolf's body with brown fur and big gold-ish, strangely familiar, eyes. As I begin to recall the forgotten memory, the thing smashes through the passenger seat window, tearing and clawing at me and I instinctively block my face with my right arm as chunks of broken window fly at me. Auggie reaches around from the seat behind me attempting to force the wolf back out of the window, getting bit at before it turns it's attention back onto me. I hear myself scream as the car jerks sideways, fighting against the wet road. My head makes contact with something hard and the last thing I see is glass and blood.

-

I sense the wolf seconds before he jumps through the passenger window of the car. I jerk the steering wheel to the left as hard as possible in an attempt to get rid of him but it doesn't help. Instead, Amberlyn cries out as her head slams against the dashboard and she gets knocked out. I'm about to go Red on him when the cat jumps up and attacks the wolf's face, causing him to back out of the window. He falls to the road and as we speed off, he chases us for minutes. Then he suddenly stops and turns toward the woods, perking his ears up, and disappears into them. I can sense more Darksider's waiting for him, hiding deep in the woods, out of site. I slam my foot back onto the gas pedal and speed home. I won't let them get her. I won't let them get any of us, I think, glancing through the rearview mirror to make sure no one else is hurt.
