When Andy got home her dad was already fast asleep. On the counter was a tray of food and Andy recognized the pan as Carmens. After quickly placing it in the fridge, Andy took a long shower and went to bed.
Unfortunately she didn't get to fall asleep until around three. But luckily, she had enough homework to keep her occupied.
As Andy was leaving for school, her dad was getting ready.
"Where you off to?" Andy smiled softly.
"Uh, I'll explain later, yeah?" Andy nodded.
"I need to talk to you about something." She set down her bag and nervously approached him.
"What's up, kid?" He chugged a glass of orange juice.
"What's the last thing you heard of my mother?" He almost choked on the juice.
"Your mom? You've never asked about your mom before..." Johnny trailed off.
"I know, just answer the question please."
"Last I heard she was forced into rehab after losing you. Why?"
"Shes back..."
"Shes what?"
"She showed up at the tournament yesterday, and she gave me a car." Andy held up the keys. Johnny was silent, staring at the keys and at his daughter. "Shes got a husband, and another daughter...she's clean."
"Are you okay?" Johnny asked.
"I don't know...I'm mad at her, for not finding me earlier, for leaving me all these years. But at the same time I get it." Andy sighed, stuffing her hands in her pockets. "I texted her last night. If it's okay with you I'm gonna ditch half a day and go to lunch with her."
"Yeah, yeah that's okay. Listen to me, your mom and me are nothing. I haven't wanted anything to do with her. But if you want her in your life, that's okay by me. We'll work something out." Johnny put his hand on her shoulder.
"I don't even know her yet. Let's see how she is first."
"Yeah, now show me this car she got."
By the time half the day was done, Andy was ready to explode. Everyone was suddenly acting like Miguel's best friend and it annoyed her.
"Don't worry, you're still my best friend." Miguel wrapped an arm around her. It sent a pang to her heart but she ignored it.
"Yeah yeah. I gotta go." Andy shrugged out from under his arm and headed for the front doors.
"Where are you going?" Miguel asked, confused.
"Lunch with Vanessa." Andy simply explained.
"Call me after?"
"Duh!"
Andy was really enjoying this car, and when she made it to the restaurant her mother had reserved, she felt underdressed. The hostess led her to a private room where her mother sat, looking at the menu.
"Hello Andrea-or is it Andy now?"
"Andy is preferred. Only Rosa calls me Andrea." She smiled and sat down.
"Andy it is then. By the way, you totally don't have to call me mom, Vanessa is perfectly fine." Andy gave a nod, finding it hard to remain mad at her. "I'm sure you have questions..."
"Why didn't you come find me earlier? Why wait until I'm this old?" She whispered in a hurt tone.
"Well for the first few years I was making sure I wouldn't relapse. I didn't want to enter your life only to leave again. Then Me and Derek got married and I got pregnant with Nicole...I just realized that the perfect time was never going to come so we just came." Vanessa explained, sipping her water.
"You could of called."
"I thought about it everyday. Sending letters or calling. But I knew I wanted the first time we ever saw or contacted each other be through person." Vanessa explained.
"That wasn't your choice to make." Vanessa looked down. "I spent 10 years without a mom. My dads a drunk and an asshole but at least he was there. He was there when I needed him. He went through months of court dates to get me and raised me to be who I am. If you think you can walk into my life and suddenly act like a parent you're damn well wrong. You have to earn the title of mom. You know who has? Carmen. She was there when I needed a home cooked meal. She was there when I cried over a boy. She was there when I was so broken inside because a boy touched me without permission. She was there. You weren't. You were being a real parent to a little girl who's never gonna know what it's like to not have a mom like I do. So fuck you for not being in my life." Andy set the keys to the BMW on the table and got up and left. She didn't care that she would now have to walk all the way home. All she cared about was getting away from her.
Pain filled her heart. It shouldn't of hurt as much as it did. Her mother was the one who held back for so many years. She was the reason Andy didn't have a parent.
By the time Andy got to the dojo, she was 10 minutes late for class. She knew her father would understand. Walking in, she saw that Hawk and Miguel were doing push-ups on their knuckles and Aisha was warming up everyone.
She ignored everyone as went to the office to talk to her dad.
"Sorry I'm late. I forgot my gi at home too." She mumbled.
"It's alright. How did it go?" He asked, looking directly at her.
"Not good. I'll explain later."Andy gave the best smile she could and turned out to go train with the others.
Throughout training, Andy kept a neutral face and didn't speak much. Nobody pressured her and she heavily appreciated it. Training ended and Andy just wanted to go home and curl into a ball.
"Hey. You okay?" Andy looked at the person talking to her and found Miguel. She sighed and turned back to her bag, doing her best to hold in her tears.
"I went off on my mom, exploded really." She whispered so low he barely heard it. Miguel looked at her in sympathy and sat down next to her, pulling the girl into his arms. That's all she needed in this moment.
"Hey, Sensei said we have to watch that movie, wanna go to Hawks with everyone and watch it?" Miguel asked after a few minutes.
"What? And have his mom question why we broke up?" Andy scoffed. "God I love that woman, how am I suppose to tell her..."
"I get it. Want me to take you home?" Miguel asked, kissing her forehead softly.
"No, just stay here for a minute more please." He nodded and held her tighter.
"I'm always here, yeah?"
"I know."
