Victoria's POV

It's been three months since I met Michael. He was a new student at the school, with brown hair tinged with red, warm brown eyes, and brightly tanned skin. His energy was infectious, full of life and optimism that shaped who he was. His constant smile was something I had come to love; whenever he smiled, I couldn't help but smile too. Somehow, his happiness made me happier.

We always talked and even shared a few classes. At that moment, we were walking to the lunch line from our English class. People stared at us and whispered every day, but we ignored them. At least, I did. Michael, on the other hand, would get angry and sometimes say something to them, but when I asked what they said, he'd shake it off and flash one of his contagious smiles. I couldn't help but let go of my impending irritation. He was worth staying happy for.

There were so many feelings coursing through me. How could someone make me feel this way so quickly? Michael was so different from me; he was funny and socially adept. Meanwhile, I was the kid who could only partner with the teacher in classes. People avoided me like the plague, not because I smelled or made weird faces, but because I was deaf. Not a single person knew American Sign Language. Speaking was not an option either since I was mocked for it in ninth grade. Despite years of speech lessons, never hearing myself changed things, and people weren't kind about it. So, I kept my voice locked away, never to be heard again.

"So, I've wanted to ask you something," Michael signed, dragging out his statement. I wondered what he had to say. Oh my goodness! Was he going to ask me to be his girlfriend? I had always wanted to tell him how much I liked him but never built up the courage. If this was the moment, I would seize it.

"What is it?" I asked, looking up at him, my eyes tracing his jawline and hair. Heat rushed through me, from head to toe, sending chills and warmth simultaneously. How could he make me feel this way so quickly? He looked at me for a moment before continuing.

"I was wondering if you'd like to come to my house later." His house? The heat coursed through me again. His house? I had never been to a boy's house before.

My eyes widened as questions raced through my mind. Would it just be him and me? Not that I'd be uncomfortable or anything.

He must have seen the fear on my face because he immediately defended his intentions. "No, nothing freaky. I mean unless you wanted to." I almost gasped in shock but felt laughter bubbling up instead. This guy is so annoying! I smacked his hands away. I was done listening to his teasing. Michael laughed too, looking away as a light pink tint filled his cheeks. "I just wanted you to meet my family."

I smiled. Oh my. He wants me to meet his family? "I didn't know we were on that level yet," I said jokingly. But he didn't seem to find it funny. He looked shocked, as if he had overstepped.

"I'm sorry. I don't want to make you uncomfortable. You are one of the coolest friends I've ever had; I told them that you're deaf, and they wanted to meet you. Plus, my entire family is deaf aside from me, so they really want to meet you," he explained quickly. After he finished, I placed my hands on top of his. Sometimes, I didn't need to sign what I was feeling. Touching his hair, pulling on his earlobe, smacking his hands away mid-sentence, and rubbing my hands over his—all these gestures conveyed emotions words couldn't. Michael looked down at our hands, then back at me. I smiled at him as I let go.
