"Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions."

-Proverbs 10:12

Why?

I kept asking myself that one question.

Why?

What has she ever done to me?

"What did I ever do to you?" she had screamed.

Indeed, she was right. She didn't deserve this pain. Her only folly was being born from the womb of the enemy. She didn't deserve any of this.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The sound of her chains clanking against stone whispered at my ears. I tried to tone the noise down. The noise of the chains. The noise of the slapping whips. The sound of the blades and swords. The sound of crackling, burning, branded skin.

The sound of her screams.

My eyes shut tighter.

Phosphenes.

I drowned myself in them. In her screams and in the colors swimming around in my eyes. I lifted my hand high above my head. I opened my eyes. The blade in my hand seemed to glow, reflecting the dim lights of the dungeon. I brought the blade down on my left arm and slashed thrice through my flesh. I clamped down on my bottom lip with my teeth until the coppery taste of blood filled my mouth. I spit a mouthful of blood on the floor as I stared at my heavily bleeding arm.

I deserved this.
