Felix had just turned fifteen when the end of the world started.
He could remember his exact age because his older brother had paid for his plane tickets so he could join him in South Korea for a few weeks, as a birthday gift.
He'd always been close to Christopher but, ever since his brother got a scholarship to study music production at a renowned university in Seoul, the only times they could see each other was when they video-called, or when Christopher dropped by for a few weeks during summer break. So, needless to say, Felix had been overjoyed when he learned that this time around, he would be the one going to his brother instead.
They had a grand time. Christopher showed him around campus, gave him a tour of the city, showed him all of his favorite places. He introduced him to the best restaurants around, and also to his two roommates – who also happened to be his producing buddies, and the three of them were apparently working on becoming a group.
But the fun only lasted for about a week.
Without any warning whatsoever, reports of rabid animal attacks started popping up all around the city – and then around the world. From stray cats to pet dogs to wild fauna, animals completely flipped and started attacking humans at random. It didn't take long for the streets to become unsafe and, as such, Felix, his brother, and his friends were quick to lock themselves up in their dorms.
Some said it was a new variant of the rabies. Others said it was a military test gone wrong. A few started saying it was the beginning of the wrath of God that had been a long time coming, but pretty much everyone ignored those madmen.
Though, in the end, said madmen were the closest to the truth.
Horror overtook the world when, barely two weeks after the first wave of attacks began, the people injured by the animals became... infected. The experts were at a loss, no one really knew what to make of this new development, but the infection was severe and seemingly incurable.
Through reports that started becoming more and more tensed, and less and less helpful, it was learned that a semi-sentient virus had started spreading. There was no way of knowing the source, but civilians were told that it was highly contagious and, once the virus settled in your bloodstream, there was no saving you.
(They still didn't know what actually happened to the people infected, at the time. All the officials would say was that the virus was deadly and spread quickly. Felix sometimes wondered if, had they been more open about the matter, maybe more people would have been able to survive.)
The situation, already pretty bad, quickly went to shit no long after. The hospitals were already filled to the brim and the virus kept on spreading. However, what really made everyone realize just how bad it was getting was when humans started infecting other humans – by biting them.
(The amount of zombie memes that were born from that particular aspect of the worldwide issue was pretty intense. Today, Felix still felt a little bad for laughing at them at the time.)
Mortui Ambulantes was the not-so-creative name given by the scientists – literally translated to "Walking Dead". It was an acute description of those infected, though – the semi-sentient virus killed the brain first, but the body kept on moving until the body could no longer support it.
(They called it "semi-sentient" because it had enough of a conscience of existence that it sought to procreate, or something like that. It was pretty creepy, so Felix hadn't paid it too much attention when they explained it on TV.)
