CHAPTER 4
The first week of school went by well enough, I thought as I chucked my books into the locker. Homework and assignments given throughout the week was barely 1/3 of what they used to give us in Gallagher Academy, I smiled to myself, thinking how easy it was to live a normal life.
My week started of well enough. I've met a few girls and they were quite nice and kind so I have been having lunch with them. I also saw my neighbour, Owen Dawson, quite a few times.
He seemed to be wearing the exact same outfit almost everyday. He wasn't that short, but he was small enough to be shoved over or slammed into the locker a few times by the group of jocks. He keeps a low profile and he seemed innocent enough. No one ever seem to give him a second glance but for those who did, they would always mock him and shove him around.
A few times, I wanted to step in, to protect him. To ward off his bullies. But each time when I took a step towards him, it was as if he could sense it and he would look up at me and he would shake his head, ever so slightly. So I would just take a step back and continued on my way. Always glancing back, to make sure he was okay.
But I still couldn't shake the feeling of seeing his gun over and over again. What's a boy like him doing with a gun? This was a small town. Relatively safe from any terrorists or any other bad guys.
I took out a couple more books and headed to the library to do a bit of research.
Time must have went by quicker than I imagined because when I stepped out of the library, all the lights in the school flickered for a moment, then shut off altogether. I cocked my head, wondering what had happen when I realised it was past 6 in the evening. The school would've been closed already. I groaned when I realised I needed to sneak out of the school without setting off the alarms and unlock the gate.
I hurried down the corridor, my shoes slapping against the floor gently. Just before I rounded another corridor, I heard muffled voices. Feeling curious, I decided to eavesdrop on their conversations so I quickly sneaked nearer towards the room where they were and it took me awhile to realise that they were speaking in Mandarin. Being a student from Gallagher Academy, I knew how to listen and converse with at least 17 different types of languages, with Mandarin being one of them.
"Ni gen ma zai ze li?" I heard a girl hiss. "Ni zhi bu zhi dao zi wei xien mah? What on earth are you doing here? Do you not know how dangerous it is?
"Wo mei ban fa. Hao xiang you ren fa xien wo men de si ling bu le," another voice belonging to a guy snapped back. I didn't have a choice. I think someone found out our whereabouts of our headquarters already.
The girl let out a frustrated breath. "Again?" this time, she spoke in English. "This is the fourth time we've been found out. Either the cops are getting really smart or we have a mole within us. Although I'm guessing, it's the latter."
"Maybe you're right. I mean, you could be. I'll get someone to investigate."
"So what brings you here?" the girl asked, her voice laced with a unique twist of slight Chinese accent mixed with American.
"Just to give you a little update. And also, I was just passing by." he replied. His voice though had a thicker flow of Chinese accent than the girl.
I'm guessing the girl had shoved the guy cause I heard something hard crash into the bookcase, "You risked so much just to tell me something I would hear in a few hours?" the girl voice was laden with anger. "Ni zhi dao ni zhe yang zhuo zi ben mah? Ru guo you ren kan ni, zhe me ban?" she hissed again, rattling out like a machine gun in a string of Mandarin. Do you know how stupid you are by doing this? What if someone saw you? What then?
