CHAPTER 2

I trudged back to my room and as I pushed open the door, three pairs of eyes stared at me.

"What happened?" they all asked together. I swung the towel that was still on my shoulder off my back and threw it in the laundry basket.

"My dad missed six call-ins," I said flat-out.

Olivia, my geeky, tech-savvy roommate, gasped. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand, her big blue eyes visibly wide behind her glasses.

Evelyn and Jasmine just stared at me, their mouths hanging.

"What?" Jasmine exclaimed. "Your dad? How could this happen?"

I just turn towards my olived-skin friend and look at her with sad eyes. "That's not all... I'm leaving."

Evelyn inhaled sharply. "No! No way you can leave here. No way, April!" She kept shaking her head as she continued, "you're already in your senior year! Stay with us and graduate here!" she begged.

"I-I can't, guys. I'm sorry," I said softly. Jasmine's emerald green eyes were glistening from the tears that was threatening to spill. "Mr. Solomon is already creating a new ID for me and my mom," I continued. "We're transferring to some small town about three hours away from here. Don't worry," I said and tried to smile at them, but failing miserably. "I can still come and see you guys sometimes."

Well, at least I hoped I could.

Olivia, Evelyn and Jasmine startled me as they all came towards me and started hugging me at once. The tears that I had tried to keep in check, were pouring out freely now.

"Here," Olivia said, as she thrust out a package towards me. "Open it!" she urged. It has already been a week since I got the news and told the girls about how I was supposed to leave this school and try to lead a normal life. And I was officially preparing to leave the Gallagher Academy today.

Slowly, I tore the wrapping away and as I peered into the box, I laughed. "An iPhone, Liv? Seriously?"

"It's not just an iPhone!" Olivia said defensively. Evelyn laughed too as she said, "It's one of Liv's creation, silly. She cannibalised one of their latest phone that's apparently very popular among normal teenagers these day," she smirks, emphasising the word normal.

"It's hack-proof, fingerprint-sensitive, voice activated and if anyone ever tries to use it, it'll send out a bug that'll crash the whole system down!"

"So you can use this phone to contact us and keep in touch with us and not worry about anyone hacking into your audio feeds or messages and risk finding out the truth about The Gallagher Academy!" Jasmine added, with a laugh.

"Plus it can be used as a bug sweeper or you can also use it to hack into other people's phone or computer," Olivia said with a self-satisfied smirk.

"Wow. This is so cool!" I exclaimed. "Thank you so much, Liv," I said, as I hugged my roommate.

"That's not all there is you know," she said with a wink. "There's also a manual book inside there that explains everything." She frowned a little as she continued, "it took me awhile to write that though." And we all laughed at her expression.

"And this," Evelyn reached out behind the drawers and pulled out a package, "is a little something from me," she said as she handed me the soft package.

I peeled back the soft material that was covering it and I smiled. It was a varsity jacket with my new school logo on it.

"It seems that everyone wears that there," Evelyn said with a small smile. "So you'll blend in better with the crowd."

"Thanks, Lyn," I said as I gave her a big hug.

"Sorry I couldn't get you anything nice though," said Jasmine in a small voice. "I only have a small thing for you. And it's a normal basic stuff that everyone have. I know you finished yours already though. So I got you a new one." She said with a small smile, as she handed me a tube of pink lipstick, that was actually made up of super-intense acidic cream that can eat away anything including bulletproof glass and all kinds of metals.

"Oh Jasmine!" I exclaimed. "You didn't have to get me anything at all!" I cried out as I went over to her and gave her a hug too. "Your friendship is more than enough for me. All of your friendship are enough for me, guys."

Olivia and Evelyn came over as we all just stood there, hugging each other. "I'll miss you guys so much," I said, my voice muffled by their hair. And a fair amount of 'I'll miss you too' and 'I love you' was exchanged.

Finally, it was time to go. I got into the car and gave one last look towards my best friends and smiled at them. Olivia was trying her best not to cry, and Evelyn and Jasmine were putting their arms around Olivia, trying to comfort her.

The car slowly started driving out the half-mile-long driveway that curved through the hills and out the school, leaving behind the towering wrought-iron gates.

My mom looked at me and smiled a sad smile. She placed her hand on top of mine and tried to assure me that everything would be fine. She handed me a brown folder before looking our the window and staring at the trees that was passing by so quickly, getting lost in thought.

I sighed as I took the folder out of her hands and found a driver's license, a student card, and an ID from the State Department, all with my picture but someone else's name on it.

So it looks like from now on, I'll be starting my new life as a smart, animal lover, teenage girl whose dad had died in a car accident, named Katrina Ann Walker, who is going to attend the local school in a small town, where she does not know a single soul there. Brilliant, I thought, as I closed back the folder after I finished memorising my legend. Just brilliant.
