The Thestrals are commonly known as omens of misfortune and aggression in the Wizarding World. They are messengers of Death, according to many wizards. To catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures, you had to witness Death itself and be able to understand its meaning. Once it is done, their grim and ghostly appearance will haunt your eyes and only remind you of the person that died in front of your eyes. It is why wizards are spooked by them, though Thestrals remain harmless.

Verity Hewitt, once named Amara, never listened to these assumptions. She hadn't been able to see them until an unfortunate day during her fourth year at Hogwarts, while she had gone home for Christmas. It took mere seconds before the person she loved the most died in her arms, tainting her once-innocent eyes. The Thestrals were visible to the young teenager ever since then.

The rest of her fourth year was spent with Verity putting walls around her. No one, not even her best friends, was able to get through them. She had stopped talking to them, had broken up with her girlfriend, and even ceased going to Quidditch practice. It was hard seeing her walking around the school as she instead went into the Forbidden Forest and took comfort in Death's messengers' presence.

Once the fifth year started, she became less reserved. This caught a certain Ravenclaw's attention, Blake McKinnon. He is the most popular boy in the blue and bronze house, his blue eyes able to charm any girls he locked eyes with. Verity, despite the warnings from her friends, found herself as one of those girls.
