At Hogwarts, the houses were once tight-knitted. A long time ago, after the four heirs of the castle on the hill agreed on the houses, the school lived in peace. The stereotypes known today were inexistent, although the students were all different depending on the colours they wore. Slytherins were more ambitious and cunning, whereas Gryffindors valued bravery and chivalry. Hufflepuff was the house representing loyalty and hard work, and then Ravenclaw took in the students who valued cleverness and creativity.

That all changed when one Slytherin turned evil. Salazar Slytherin, the founder of his house, ruined his reputation the moment he shared his pureblood ideology. Suddenly, he became a purist and refused any muggle-born in his house. Suddenly, the Slytherin house represented purity and evil. Gryffindor was now its rival, its students all possessing a hero complex. The ones in Hufflepuff were considered weak, and those placed in Ravenclaw were all dull. From then on, a division was made.

However, there was one thing that brought everyone together: Quidditch. At Hogwarts, this sport wasn't a playful competition, but a life-or-death situation. Every year, the tension between the houses before a match became suffocating. Even the teachers were on the edge of their seats. But the parties after a match, everyone looked forward to them. During those, no matter whether your house lost or won, students had fun together. They drank, danced, and prayed they wouldn't get caught and punished for being up after curfew.

This was why, despite the sun barely showing, Verity Hewitt and Harry Kingsley stood in the centre of the Quidditch. Up in the stands, Belle Delacour sat in the front row, eager to see her best friends play again. She was never accepted as a real player, but the team's Captain did agree to make her a substitute for the Chaser position without any tryouts needed.

A shiver ran down Verity's spine as the wind blew. "Who had the idea of starting the tryouts so early?" she asked bitterly, wrapping her arms around herself. "It's the end of September. Summer is over, people."

Harry glared at the boy who had everyone's attention. "Probably another one of his plans to make you suffer. If only I could curse his bloody arse."

Verity glanced at the boy Dumbledore had named as the Ravenclaw Quidditch team's new captain, the cold morning air no longer bothering her. She would never admit it, but Blake becoming the Captain instead of her had caused a deep feeling of jealousy to blossom in her chest. Why was it that the boy who had ruined her life got the one thing she had worked so hard to get? He didn't deserve it, not like Verity did.

"It's fine," Verity lied, staring at the back of Blake's head. "He'll find a way to ruin this. Nothing good lasts with Blake."

It wasn't entirely true. Somehow, Blake always got what he wanted. There was nothing out of his reach. Even Verity had fallen into his trap last year, though with a lot of help, she managed to leave. Their relationship was the one thing Blake couldn't keep and the one thing he would never get back. Unfortunately, even after Verity came to class with mysterious bruises, the whole school remained at Blake's feet. He remained Ravenclaw's golden boy and the boy everyone admired.
