INTIMIDATED IMMIGRANT
Alicia Lee closed the door quietly behind her. She began to stroll down the 'suburban street of danger', as it is known. She clutched her backpack straps tightly between her palms and kept her head down low. It was still early in the morning, and the streets were empty. The bitter coldness sent shivers down her spine, as she tried to warm herself up by speeding up her pace.
When she arrived at the bus stop, she stood near a wall and looked down. There was quite a few people standing around the station, and some of them glanced her way before looking away. She rubbed her hands together to feel some warmth on her palms, and hoped that today would be a different day.
Two months ago, she was ecstatic. Australia finally declared that they would allow Asian immigrants to visit or live as a temporary resident. Alicia's father applied a student visa for her so she could study all the way until she graduated school. He said that it was a very good advantage for her, as they provide good educations.
Now, she didn't think it was a good idea after all.
"Hey Ching Chong!"
She sighed and kept her head down. She could hear a group of male students walking towards her direction. They stopped walking and looked down at her like she was some five year old. In fact, Alicia was older than them by two years.
"What, cat got your tongue, or did you eat her first?" The tallest one said. His mates giggled at the joke but all she did was ignored them and hoped the bus would arrive soon.
"Oi, she's not looking up. Nevermind, she can't see!" Another round of laughter from them. She clenched her fists, but tried to calm herself down.
Alicia looked up at the tallest one and she struggled to form a sentence, "Will... you stop it?"
"Ching chong li long! She can speak the Engrish!" One of the four hooted.
She sighed and looked away. Can these guys get anymore thick headed and leave her alone?
The bus finally came and she felt relieved. Alicia quickly hopped inside the bus and sat on the furthest corner. Every single day, she thought about how she regretted moving to Australia. She had to put up with the bullying, the stereotypes and the looks.
When the bus arrived at her school, she stepped out and scanned the surrounding around her. A couple of students glanced at her and scurried away as quickly as they could. They would never think of her as a normal student, but rather a foreigner that didn’t belong here. She knew that because of the constant whispers that echoed around the school. She wasn’t the only one who got criticised; there were five other people who came from the same culture as her.
The school that she attended had a new support program called ESL. It stood for English as Second Language, and it was specifically for people who were struggling to speak English. Before she came here, her old school taught their students to speak the basics of it, so she knew little.
