“Oh mother, what am I to do? I know he’s not dead...I can still feel him alive in my heart. I must find him!” I wept silently. The cemetery was deserted. Of course, who else would be there at that time of night?

I didn’t notice anything happen until I felt someone caress my hair. I lifted my head up quickly and saw my mother...or at least her spirit. For some strange reason, I wasn’t afraid.

“Mama?” She nodded silently. She gave me a small smile and I sat up.

“How is this possible?” I whispered.

“I know how much you’re hurting my dear child.”

“They are just saying he’s dead...”

“He’s not.” I stared at her.

“How do you know that?” I asked with renewed hope.

“I just do, sweetheart. He’s not here...his brother is though...” she replied quietly. I felt fresh tears coming down my eyes. Liam was like a big brother to me and I could feel my heart break. I knew how much he meant to Killian...he was the one to take care of him after their father had disappeared.

“What happened?” I choked out.

“The plant they were supposed to bring back does not heal...it kills. Killian has renounced his life as a lieutenant in favour of becoming a pirate...”

“A pirate? Why didn’t he come back for me?” I asked tearfully.

“He still thinks of you and he will never forget you but he believes he has failed you and he thinks you’ll be much better off without him...” she answered sadly. I suddenly felt angry.

“Well that’s not his choice to make now, is it!” I hissed. I stood up and turned around, trying to hold back the tears, “Killian...how could he think that? I can only imagine how broken he is over his brother. It was enough of a blow for him to lose his father but now his brother...? I wouldn’t leave him just because of that...”

I felt hands on my shoulders turning me around. My mother hugged me trying to comfort me.

“I must go find him mother, but I don’t know how!” I wept silently. I heard her sigh.

“It is time you found out...”

“Find out what?” I asked confused. She led me to a bench and we both sat down.

“My dear, I wasn’t human when I was alive. In fact, what I died from, is nothing less than the plant Killian and his brother were sent to bring...Dreamshade.”

I stared at her, “What do you mean you weren’t human? H-how...what?” I was incredibly confused. I never even once thought about magic being real before. And now, here was my mother telling me she wasn’t human...

“I was an Elf and this makes you half-elven. You don’t have all the traits of us elves...you do resemble your father in your mannerisms,” she said with a wistful smile, “However, you possess my powers. You just need to waken them. They are what will help you in your journey to find your beloved.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was half-elven? I had powers? What did that even mean?

“I know this is a lot to take in sweetheart. I should be with you right now, alive and well but I got nicked by the Dreamshade not very long before I died. It was one of the few things that could kill me, for I was supposed to be immortal in this world.”

“Am...am I immortal too?” I asked weakly.

“Yes, you also will never grow old and you have all the powers that elves possess, including better eyesight and hearing, the ability to travel long distances without leaving any tracks, and foresight. You are lithe on your feet and your perception of the world around you is much deeper than any human being’s. You can do anything you want; you only have to wish it. You also have yet to find your skill Karla.”

I tried to take in everything she was saying. I can do anything I want, I only have to wish it...

“How do I find my skill?” I asked. She smiled at me and began to fade.

“Look inside yourself. Whatever you do though, don’t lose your will to live, or love...I love you...” she whispered before she disappeared. I just stared at the empty spot where she’d just been. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

“I love you too, mama,” I whispered inaudibly.

I walked back to my home in a daze. I got into bed but I didn’t sleep. I found I wasn’t sleepy. I kept going over what my mother had said to me. The fact that she appeared to me didn’t scare me for some reason. I got out of bed and walked over to my window and stared out to the ocean.

“Wherever you are Killian, I’ll find you!” I whispered as a gentle breeze caressed my hair.
