My heart was beating so much I couldn’t really focus on anything I was doing. Time just wouldn’t pass quickly enough that day! I had changed into a lighter gown. It wasn’t that late anyway, at least not for my standards. My father had retired to his chambers about half an hour after we’d arrived. My father was getting old and he was growing tired very quickly, poor thing. Still, this gave me the chance to sneak around more easily.
Killian was there on time, just as he’d promised. He threw some tiny pebbles at my window and I opened it.
“I’ll be down in a few minutes,” I whispered. I quickly made my way downstairs and into the garden where Killian was waiting for me. I ran into his arms and he embraced me tightly.
“Karla,” he whispered before pulling away. He grabbed my hand and took me to a more secluded spot in our garden. I realised it was my mother’s favourite spot when she was alive and it had become ours as time went by.
“I’m so happy for your promotion Killian,” I repeated yet again that evening. He smiled at me and caressed my cheek.
“Did your father really give us his blessing?” he asked. I nodded as I reached up to the hand on my cheek.
“I know, I can’t believe he’s known all this time! It’s uncanny!” I laughed but then I stopped. Killian was looking at me intensely.
“You know we haven’t had our first kiss yet...” he whispered as he moved closer. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest by the way it was beating.
“What are we waiting for then?” I asked in a whisper as I moved even closer. When our lips finally touched it was like magic. It was nothing like I’d ever imagined but it was the most wonderful thing to ever happen to me. I knew I was kissing my soul mate. I felt him pour all his love into the kiss and his hand reaching into my loose, wavy locks. My arms went around his neck and I ran my fingers through his soft, short hair. I sighed in happiness and felt a tear trickle down my cheek.

Killian couldn’t believe the sensations he was feeling as he finally kissed his beloved. He felt his life make sense again. She was the only constant thing in his life and he was ever so grateful for it. She was his soul mate. She was his sun. He would never let her go, ever! He pulled away as he felt her wet cheek.
“What is it?” he asked, slightly worried.
She looked at him with dazed eyes and she smiled before she leaned into his chest.
“I am so in love with you,” she said with a happy sigh.
He felt his heart soar and lifted her chin up to look into her eyes.
“I am so in love with you too,” he replied before kissing her again.

Alas, things didn’t go as they were planning though. A few weeks later, Killian and his brother were to go on a special expedition for the King to a far-off island to obtain some strange plant said to be able to heal any affliction.
“I have a bad feeling about this Killian,” said Karla with a worried look on her face.
“Don’t worry so much, darling. It’s just like any other expedition we’ve had so far. I’ve always come back, haven’t I?” he reassured her as he took her in his arms.
“Yes, I know...but...”
“Karla, will you marry me?” he asked cutting her off. She froze and blinked a few times. She pulled away and gazed at him to make sure she’d heard right.
“What?” she choked out. He smiled softly and dropped down to one knee while taking out a box from his jacket pocket.
He opened it and asked again, “Will you marry me?
Karla stared in shock but quickly shook herself out of her stupor. Her hand flew to her mouth and she choked back the tears. She could only nod before a resounding ‘yes’ burst out of her. He quickly stood up and picked her up, twirling her around and kissing her deeply.
“Yes, yes, a million times yes,” she whispered happily. That’s when she caught sight of her father in the doorway to their garden with a bemused smile before he went back inside.
Killian put her down and pushed the ring onto her left-hand ring finger facing away from her body, to mean that she was engaged. It was a white gold Claddagh ring* with a midnight blue stone set in the middle.“It’s so beautiful Killian,” she whispered. He took her hand in his and explained the story behind the ring and how wearing it in different ways would convey different meanings.
“When I come back, we will get married immediately,” he then added. She looked up to him, worry lacing her eyes again. She put her hands on each side of his face.
“Please, be careful!” she whispered before kissing him. He pulled her tightly to him as he kissed her back.
“I will, I promise. I’ll see you soon,” he whispered with one final peck on her lips. And then, he was gone.
She watched as his ship sailed away from port. The ship was still in sight when two more ships started attacking theirs from behind. She watched the scene in horror and then she was startled when the ship moved out of the water, and took flight and disappeared forever.
She immediately ran to her father to tell him what had happened. He wouldn’t believe her at first but she insisted and he took her to the person responsible for setting everything up for the expedition. She ranted and raved about her fiancée disappearing into thin air. He tried to reassure her that they were all fine. He divulged the fact that the sails were made of Pegasus feathers and that would allow them to travel to their destination which was situated in another world. Karla was gobsmacked.
“How can you be so sure that they will come back from this when you’ve sent them somewhere blindly?!” she raged. He reassured her that Killian and his brother, along with their crew were the best ones to be sent. If anyone could make it there and back, it would be them. She still wasn’t convinced but she agreed to keep the magical part to herself.
She was still in shock about that new fact when they’d got home. Her worry only grew and she prayed and prayed that he would be all right.
Weeks passed and there was still no word of the ship or its crew. Karla’s fears were growing. After 6 months, they got news that the expedition had failed and that the whole crew was missing, presumed to be dead. Karla couldn’t take it anymore. She wouldn’t accept the fact that Killian was dead, especially when nobody was sure what had happened.
One night, she left her father’s house to go to her mother’s grave, crying. She hadn’t visited the grave ever since her mother had died.
That was the night everything changed for her.
