Saying no always has consequences Kara reflected rather moodily.
Glaring at the wall in front of her she decided she was done with caring, it always got her in trouble is some way or other. Now it had made her hit the all time new low. Running away with her tails between her legs to her last living family had seriously turned her already jaded self into a pessimist.
" You need a job and soon," speaking of the devil, Kara glanced up to Aunt Ally's face as she continued "After all I can't keep paying for you. I simply do not have enough extra money saved up." Aunt Ally seemed honestly distressed, as if she meant the words and you felt a rush of shame and pity.
Sighing because that is what got you into this mess in the first place Kara nodded while her mind spun with possible jobs she could get." When you were in the army what exactly was your position."
"Low rank foot soldier who had the honor of being thrown into battle first while the others hope you die. Why?"
Warily Kara waited for an answer. She was proven that that was the right response any time someone asked something like that seconds later. "You should get a post here for a job and even a living space for when I tire of you."
Ally's words were meant to be teasing but it hit an old nerve and Kara stood rattling the table and startling Aunt Ally as Kara spun and stalked out of the house.Flashback
"You are going to the army, pack your bags and be at the station by ten o clock or run to the camp."Kara was left gaping at her father's words. Though honestly she did not know why they were a surprise to her, nobody ever showed any hint of affection for the lonely fourteen year old. In fact it was the exact opposite, going out of the way to annoy Kara so when she snapped they had a reason for attacking her. Her father sucked in a sharp breath when Kara did not respond and stomping forward snatched at her hair, pulling her gaze from the floor into his eyes." Didn't you hear me," he demanded, "Get packing I've had enough of you and the army is generous enough to take your sorry behind in," with one last painful wrench of Kara's hair the old man stalked out not noticing the hint of relief that had bloomed oh the young girl's face.End of flashback
Kara shook her head to get rid of the memories and started jogging along the familiar walking path she had used since she got here several weeks ago.
Seeing as it was past nine she was not expecting to see anyone on this path as even in the day it was isolated with only one or two others.
So when someone literally ran into her instincts overpowered everything else and she had flipped them onto the ground with a knife pressed against their throat in less time than it took to lace up her boots.
"What are you doing? Also in case you don't realize it's bad manners to hold a knife to my throat." Kara was jolted off the battle field and back to the present by his dry words.
It took a second to understand them and another to realize she was still on top of him. As soon as she remembered Kara scrambled over herself to get away. "It is also impolite to run into someone, I was just defending myself," Kara's declaration was met with a half smile as the man pushed himself to his feet.
"My apologizes as well in that case. Let me introduce myself," he paused to clear his throat before saying, "my name is Lucifer and I believe our first meeting should have gone at least marginally better so let me give my apologies once again." Lucifer watched Kara obviously expecting something back.
However with a shake of her head Kara spread her wings needing to get away from this oddly polite man. In her experience polite people always gave her the worst "punishments" if you could even call them that. With one last look Kara jumped and shot into the air, and then she was flying through the cold air back to Ally's. After all a warm house was better than the cold stone of the streets.
