KIYOKO HAD NEVER SEEN Y/N LOOK THIS EMBARRASSED. as soon as y/n entered her car, kiyoko began asking her why she took so long to come out. before she could finish getting the words out of her mouth, y/n became incredibly flustered.
this greatly confused kiyoko. what was there to be embarrassed about? did y/n get into trouble or cause a scene? this wasn't like her. she was never flustered. "can you please calm down?"
"sorry." y/n squeaked out. right now, y/n was feeling beyond embarrassed and guilty that she had made her best friend, who she hadn't seen in a while, wait on her while she talked to a random boy she just met. she was too embarrassed to even try to explain herself to kiyoko, not wanting to be on the receiving end of one of her infamous 'i'm disappointed in you' looks.
"it's fine, don't worry about it," noticing how apprehensive her friend seemed to be about the topic, kiyoko decided to talk about something else. "are you excited for school next month?"
internally thanking kiyoko for sparing her further embarrassment, y/n calmed down. "i am. i already have an idea of what it's like from what you've told me before, but how do you think it will go?" although she sounded impassive and relaxed about the topic, the soon-to-be karasuno student felt quite anxious.
at her old school she was constantly bombarded with friendship requests from people who just wanted status or love confessions from people who only liked her for her looks. it was exhausting. although the bombardment failed to cease, she opted to isolate herself from her peers. it saved her from the pain of being used. besides, she already had kiyoko. all she needed to do was hold out until their third year when they would officially be reunited. that reminder was enough to get her through those two difficult years.
but that was then, this is now. the chance to start over. it's just like before, but this time everything would be alright; because now, y/n has shimizu kiyoko by her side.
"hmm, well i can think of a couple of people who might seem really rowdy at first," kiyoko laughed fondly as she thought about the wild group of boys that had become a second family to her, "but you'll get used to it eventually. who knows, maybe you'll come to enjoy their antics?"
she didn't admit this, but kiyoko was actually hoping that y/n would join the team and assist her as a second manager this year. after all, having some extra help couldn't do any harm. although she did want to spend more time with her best friend, deep down kiyoko knew that being a part of the team would be good for y/n.
surrounding herself with the chaotic members of the boys volleyball team spared her from having to endure two long years of loneliness, unlike y/n who had been companionless that whole time. all she had was kiyoko, but she was in a different city. it wasn't like y/n's absent family would bother checking on her well-being, kiyoko did that for her. when it came to y/n, kiyoko would do whatever it took to be there. they were like sisters, after all.
y/n contemplated this for a moment. perhaps being more adventurous would benefit her in the long run? she would never know if she didn't find out. "maybe i will," she softly giggled , "i'd like to meet these so-called 'rowdy people'."
kiyoko smiled at her friend's unusual boldness, "i can arrange that."
before their conversation could progress any further, they had reached their destination. it was a rather small, yet adorable, apartment complex. they would be staying in room 4C on the third floor. it may not have looked like much to others, but to them, it was better than anything they could have asked for.
"are you ready?" y/n inquired, excited to check out the interior of their new home. they already had the keys and didn't need to check in with anyone. they were free to head into their new home whenever they liked.
taking a deep breath, soaking in the new atmosphere, kiyoko nodded, "as ready as i'll ever be." they hopped out of the car, locking the doors behind them when they finished gathering all of their belongings from the trunk.
after making their way up several flights of stairs, they were standing in front of their room. kiyoko grabbed onto y/n's hand as she watched her friend unlock the door with anticipation. suddenly, the door swung open.
"well i guess that did the trick." y/n joked, coughing as a cloud of dust flew out of their new apartment.
kiyoko scanned the entrance, "it seems like no one's been here in a while."
y/n playfully rolled her eyes as she sarcastically remarked, "oh really? i couldn't tell."
after bringing all of their boxes inside, they took a look around. there wasn't much to it. it was just a traditional 2-bedroom apartment.
"we should probably clean up a bit and rest before we do too much work here." kiyoko pointed out as she whacked the dust off of some pillows.
y/n fanned the air around her. "agreed."
the two split off to do their own thing, leaving y/n with the chance to finally process everything that's happened today.
hmm, maybe she should message that cute boy? it wouldn't do any harm. her eyes gazed over the various boxes of belongings that were scattered throughout the apartment.
maybe she should talk to him after unpacking.
