A week goes by, and it has been shit. More life problems coming in, but it is what it is. I haven't talked to Eli or Jace ever since that day in Quinton's Café. So while I was on break at work I decided to text both of them. None of them responded, so I went on with my day being a waitress taking people's orders.
"Hey Eleanor you forgot to scrub that side of the room over there. Get to it when you are done serving table 14." Connie said.
God, if only I got paid enough for this job. I hate it here, but it was the only place that accepted me to work at the age of 17. I hate Connie, she is my manager but if she didn't accept me into the job, I would be homeless by now. My mother kicked out of her place so now I live in an apartment by myself. The place is small and torn apart, but it's what I can afford at the moment. My mom comes in to check on me. I don't know what for since she kicked me out. I kept checking my phone every 20 minutes to see if either Eli or Jace responded to my text message, they didn't respond at all. So as the hours went by I continued working til my shift was over.
I got home by 8:00 p.m. I had to catch up on some summer school work since I was lacking due to work. I now have to do summer school until I finish all the work I have to make up for, and it is exhausting having no summer break. Luckily I finished my work around 10:36. I got up to eat the same dinner as usual. Canned fish with a piece of bread. I haven't had a full meal in forever. As I watch the water droplets from my roof drip down to the bucket I place on my floor I hear the neighbors fighting again. I decide to go out and see if anything has happened. Nothing happened really. The moment I try to go back into my apartment I have found myself locked out of my place. I didn't even have a key with me at all. I was pissed, I stormed out of the apartment ending up outside. The sidewalks of New York were wet. It had happen to rain a little earlier, it's sprinkling now, but not as much. As I take a short stroll there seems to be somewhat of a little concert going on, tons of people surrounding the musicians. Clapping, cheering, dancing, it was all full of happiness."Must be a celebration going on."
I look to my side to see who was talking, and there he was, Eli.
"Hey Eleanor, haven't seen you since the Café." Eli said. "Hey, yeah I texted you about something else too, but it seems that you haven't seen it."
"Oh no, I did see it, but my cell phone dies really quick so I couldn't respond." Eli said. "Oh"
"Yeah, so how has things been going on for you?" Eli said. "Fine I guess." I said. I really didn't feel like talking, not after not talking to him or Jace for a whole week.
"You sure? You don't seem fine to me." Eli said. "Yep positive."We just stare at everyone dancing, cheering, laughing. Nothing more joyous than this would ever come.
"Well I should be going, it is getting pretty late." I said.
"I'll walk you home, if that is fine." Eli said.
"Sure, I don't mind." I said.As we walk home, we made conversation. It was really easy having a conversation with him, and I liked it. I haven't had the chance to talk to anyone like this in years.
"Well here we are." I said.
"Oh, I forgot I was walking home with you." Eli said.
"Yeah me too. Shit" said in a low tone.
"What's wrong?" Eli said.
"The reason I am out here is because I locked myself out of my apartment." I said.
"You need some help with that? I can try to unlock your door for you." Eli said.
"You can?" I said.
"Yeah no biggie." Eli said.As I showed him which place I was in, he immediately unlocked the door using a paperclip.
"Well ta-da!" Eli said.
"You're a real lifesaver ya know, thank you so much." I said.
"Ah it was nothing, it just takes time to practice." Eli said.
"I guess it does." I said.
Eli looks at the inside of my place just from the door way, I can already feel that he is uncomfortable with the living conditions that I am living under.
"So .. this the place you live in? By yourself?" Eli said.
"Yep, this is it." I said.
"Wow .." Eli said.
There was just awkward silence there, I had no idea what to say or do instead of just looking at the ground and fidgeting with my fingers. It's what I usually do when I'm nervous.
"Well I guess it's time for me to go to bed now." I said while closing the door.
"Eleanor wait." He says as he tries to stop me from closing the door.
"Hm?" I said.
"You work right? At that tiny restaurant at the end of the block?" he said.
"Y-yeah I do." I said.
"You mind me stopping by over there? I'd really hope we could talk some more." he says with a grin on his face.
"S-sure, I don't mind." I said.
"Expect me there by 2:30 p.m." he said.
"Alrighty." I said.
"Goodnight Eleanor." he said and walks off.
"Good night Eli."
I shut the door and slide down to the floor with a smile on my face, Eli's something special.
