"All's clear. Let's go."
Five brown wolves crept in the darkness. Well, actually, five poorly camouflaged white and silver wolves. It was around midnight, and Snowflake, Ice Spike, Holly Berry, Snow Flurry, and Aequor were in totally new territory, spying on the Summerwolves.
"Do you know where their camp is?" Snowflake asked Aequor, who actually emitted a small blue light in the darkness.
"I think I remember. But we can't get too close," Aequor responded. "My friend Terra, Springwolf Spirit of earth, showed me the camp once."
"Why?"
"Summershade's camp is a natural phenomenon. Waterfalls, huge trees, yada yada, boring earth stuff."
"I find it funny that the sea Spirit and the earth Spirit are friends."
"SHHHHH!" Snow Flurry shushed at the front of the group. She looked the most beat up, leaves and dirt clinging to her fur along with the crusted mud on her back.
The troop walked a few more paces, before Aequor said "Pause!"
Snowflake stopped. "Summershade?" She saw Aequor nod, her blue and green gradient eyes whipping side to side.
Through the dim moonlight. Snowflake saw three Summerwolves; two males and a female. The female carried her head strong, with broad shoulders and a scowl on her face. One male seemed to not like her, the other coward when she looked his way. They said something, but Snowflake couldn't catch it before she drowned in visions.
Hear the wolves cry,
Of a power dead and lost.
A spirit left to vanish;
A strength of the frost.
Snowflake blinked and took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes, she found herself back in Summershade, to hear the Summerwolves' argument.
"We should attack tonight! Our power is there, I can feel it!"
"Heat Wave, that is a stupid and ridiculous choice. Last time we attacked, I mean, sure, so we killed Springshade's alpha, but we still left with no power! Springshade is hiding it somewhere!" The female said. "What do you think, Palm Tree?"
The scared male looked up. "Uh- uh... I... well. Sure."
The female growled at him then turned to the other male. "We are the superior Shade. We are strong because we aren't only tough, but we are wise. The Spirit Imperium blessed us with this power because we are extraordinary. Unlike you, who is just STUPID."
The scowling male snorted and stormed off, and the other two followed, leaving the Winterwolves utterly confused and perplexed.
"What power were they talking about?" Holly Berry asked. "And what about Wintershade? We're awesome! Right?"
Snow Flurry rolled her eyes at Holly Berry. "I think I remember stories of Summershade having a 'secret weapon.' I just didn't think it was true..." Her voice cracked on the last sentence, making Snowflake feel like she was crying. "Aequor?"
The sea Spirit didn't say anything for a few seconds. "I- I think they were talking about Imperium's blessing."
"What in the shades is that?" Ice Spike asked.
"A few years ago, Imperium announced he was to give a piece of his magic to the shade that showed they were worthy. But nobody allowed him to- all the Spirits agreed he shouldn't. I-I think that is what this is."
Silence. Everyone looked at Snow Flurry, who was looking at her paws. "The only way the war can end," She said. "Is if the lost power is found."
Snowflake thought back about her latest vision. Should I tell them? She asked herself. "Um- I need to tell everyone something."
Aequor looked at her with a look of either guilt or worry. "What is it, Snowflake?"
Ice Spike, Holly Berry, Snow Flurry, and Aequor all stared at her. Snowflake tried to find the courage to tell them.
" Hear the wolves cry,
Of a power dead and lost.
A spirit left to vanish;
A strength of the frost. "
Snow Flurry looked stunned. Holly Berry looked confused. "What was that?" Ice Spike asked.
"A vision I had," Snowflake answered. She looked at Aequor, who looked very ... excited?
"A vision !? Wow! So cool!" Aequor exclaimed. Snowflake thought it was funny that a literal Spirit thought visions were cool.
"What does it mean?" Holly Berry asked. " Hear the wolves cry of a power dead and lost. Imperium's blessing. Right?"
"We can't be sure," Snow Flurry commented. "I think we should just ignore it ..."
"But we can't, Snow Flurry," Ice Spike protested. "If we think hard we can understand-"
"No, we are wasting our time. Snowflake, your mother probably thinks you are dead. Holly Berry, your sister, Arctic Fox, is probably worried to death. Polar Bear has probably assigned a new Beta in my absence. We need to head home, Ice Spike. Listen to me. I am in charge here! " Snow Flurry scolded.
Ice Spike reluctantly nodded. The mud crusted on his fur started to fall off, revealing his white fur that sparkled like Moon Lake at sunset.
Aequor looked at Snowflake helplessly. She can't come with us, Snowflake realized. She can't just come to Wintershade.
"I'm sorry I couldn't help you guys more," Aequor whined. "I really am. I've just been a pain in the butt."
Holly Berry's green eyes glanced at Snowflake's. Holly Berry shook her head, saying "You were not. You've helped all of us in so many ways."
Aequor had tears beading in her eyes. "It's fine. I'm sure I'll just meet another pack of-" she sniffled- "wolves in 1000 years needing my help."
Snowflake shifted and the leaves under her paws crunched. She looked up through the trees and saw a full moon, looking down on them. Ibis, please help us. She silently pleaded.
The leaves rustled again, but not from Snowflake. She looked down, expecting to see Ice Spike or someone sitting in a different position, but instead everyone was still. Nobody spoke. Nobody breathed. Nobody moved.
Summershade was stalking them.
Hide, Snow Flurry mouthed. She tilted her head over to some bushes big enough to hide a few wolves. Snowflake cried to tip-toe over, when someone screamed.
She whipped her head around to see Snow Flurry being pushed to the floor by a Summershade fighter. He was the same one that they saw earlier- the growling, angry male.
"Surrender now or she dies."
