Little Miss Lovers, Little Miss Stealers
ʅChapter IV ʅ
Rebecca rode the elevator up to the top floor, retracing the steps that seemed like a world away. This used to be her world, the one she lived with Trent. But now her world consisted of Jackie, the love of her life and someone she knew she would never stop loving. What made her so happy was that the feelings were mutual.
She twisted the silver knob and entered the spotless office, walking toward the man at the desk. He looked up at her, startled, and then adorned a confused visage. “Rebecca? Look, I got the divorce papers –” he began but Rebecca cut him off.
“This isn’t about the divorce, or anything that has to do with what used to be us.” Rebecca took the seat in front of his desk at stared at him with a leveled expression. “I don’t exactly know how to tell you this, Trent, but I’m…I’m in love with a woman now.”
At first the words didn’t seem to register, but when they did, his eyes went wide. “You’re…What?!”
Surprisingly, Rebecca didn’t feel a bit ashamed, but rather annoyed. “Not everyone is straight, jackass,” she snapped. “I’m like women now, not men.”
“And this happened when?” he pressed on. He seemed shocked more than anything, but when it wore off a little bit, he looked amused.
She shrugged. “Beats me. Maybe it was all the men and how they treated me.” She raised her eyebrow in a gesture that said “I dare you to say something” but he never did. In fact, Trent’s head lowered a little bit.
“Anyways,” she continued. “I need a favor, a big one.”
Now Trent leaned forward with his arms on the desk, his gaze interested. “Suppose I said yes. What kind of favor would we be talking about?”
Rebecca smiled; this was the man she had fallen in love with, the intriguing and mystifying Trent. But he had no affect on her now. “Like helicopter big. Oh, and if the time should come, a jail bail-out.”
Trent stared at her, dumbfounded. “What have you gotten yourself into now, Becka?”
Rebecca sighed. “To put simply, I love someone who is about to do something bad and very risky. And I need you to help me with this one thing, Trey. You owe me that much, don’t you think?”
“Let me guess,” he smiled. “This involves a bank and your silly little isolated island?”
“It isn’t silly,” she retorted. “But yes, it does. Will you help me or not?”
“I think we both know my answer.”
