11

The moment that the girl opened her eyes for the very first time, her dawning sight was that of a wall clock… just opposite from her unmoving body, ticking away. She almost didn’t understand its function at first, going around in circles for several spins only to budge another hand slowly onwards.

Why would such a device exist? What was the purpose of its movement, if it was just going to end up in the exact same position in due time? She asked herself these questions, unaware of any other surface in the crystalline-white room.

The girl was both infinitely curious and upset about the clock’s existence entirely, slowly ticking down as though time was an endless resource.

After several revolutions had her hypnotised, she barely noticed the door to her left electronically open, and two lab coats glided across the floor towards a control panel of sorts. Another man came through the entrance, this time wearing a pristine-black suit as he stomped up to the girl with a commanding tone.

“Wh… ur… ame?”

She couldn’t understand what he was saying, but the entry had alerted her to the immediate surroundings… She was locked in a glass prism, caged like a lab rat with needles and various wires wrapped around her naked body.

To her right, a similar scenario was occurring within a second container, although it was a blonde-haired boy who whimpered inside the cramped space. His eyes shot to the girl, begging for her to comply with the suited man’s wishes.

The obstructing glass seemed to lift of its own accord, freeing the disoriented girl from her prison as she could finally hear what was being barked at her. “What… is… your… name?!”

“…Oooauugg…” She spat out dryly, somehow she knew that her mouth was to be used for communicating a response. How did she get here? Everything seemed so… initialised. If she didn’t know any better, she’d attribute her state of mind to that of a new-born.

The lab coats behind the dominant man scribbled and connected dots on a small clipboard, both pairs of glasses looking up expectantly. “She’s functioning well so far, Mr Kress. She has awareness of her surroundings, and was even showing signs of cognitive recognition towards that wall clock earlier.”

The suited man cast his eyes backwards grimly, clearly their boss judging from the way he carried himself around. “Did you just say, ‘she’? Don’t get attached to the test subjects, boys… ‘She’ is an ‘it’ until we have vocalisation and unsupported movement. I want results, and I want them-”

“Tee…”

“…What the…”

“Tee… Ess…”

Every pair of eyes within the laboratory stared in disbelief as the blonde girl shuffled forwards, closer to the unprotected boss man. One of the lab coats stumbled over with a shaky syringe in hand, but his superior extended a hand to stop him.

“Wait, I think it’s accessing the data we implanted within the brain. Go on, tell us your name. Make this one a success, for the love of God…”

“Tee… Ess… Nine… Teen. My… name… is… TS-19.”

The test subject TS-19 vacantly glossed over the familiar wall clock as the hands spun around many times, while the men in white coats prodded and examined her body with various instruments and told her to flex certain muscles.
