In a matter of seconds, the stage was clustered with various oddly-shaped instruments, the majority of which I had a hard time believing would even produce any sound. Tomás the 'expert' musician called me to stand out in front of the crowd, along with Blessing, Alisha and the kids.
Harry sat behind us on the drums with mild amusement, watching us potter around in front of the patient audience. We were desperately sizing up the instruments before us, trying to determine which archetype we would suck the least at playing.
"We don't even have a song, do we? Tom, man... I don't know how to play any of this crap!" I scowled at our lead guitarist as he nudged me towards what appeared to be a child's xylophone.
"There you go. That one's around your skill level, right?"
"How is that funny? We're going to look like idiots, they'll brick us!"
His one good eye lowered to mine, tearing away from his frozen stage-smile. He was putting on a huge act, but it was rough not knowing where any of it was going.
"We don't have to be good, Dan... We just need to be loud, and draw everyone's attention away from the house. You understand?"
I barely had time to throw a nervous glance over at Alisha as she plugged in one of the bass guitars, and Blessing started showing slight interest in the nearby keyboard. Tomás peaked the microphone's volume and let a smirk spread across his face.
"All right, people of Patch! Here's an original from yours truly, something I've been working on for a little while now. This one goes out to someone very dear to my heart."
He let out a couple of riffs on his guitar, and signaled Alisha who apparently knew to start laying out an alternating beat. It took her a few tries to steady herself, and Harry joined in with his snare drum once he heard the notes line up.
Raising my xylophone stick with zero enthusiasm, I decided to wait for the right moment before I attempted to humiliate myself. Dink. Dink. Dink.
Lowering his gaze to the ground, Tomás flicked Stacie's pink sunglasses down onto his nose and parted his lips. I'd heard many of his invigorating songs over the passing months, but not one of them was ever as personal as the lyrics he was about to sing.
Keeping watch, through the night
Until light, we will fight
Yeah, I'll fight for you, hun
No-oh, I won't stop, until I can face me
Let us meet, and then you might see
The man I am, the vows I will ke-ep
Just wait for me, and don't fall asle-ep
Ta-ta-tell me something new
We're lost in the sha-ade
A ghost of you
These monsters have ma-ade
Our night is due
But we'll never fa-ade
Trapped in the dark, I won't be afra-id
