*This chapter is a flashback from Fitz's memories*
Fitz Va... no, Fitz had now become one of the newly-appointed siren generals, in charge of one of the largest battalions in the siren army, which had been growing stronger and stronger by the day right under those puny elves' noses.
"The Neverseen, was a.... feeble attack on the elves. Merely a distraction." The Siren Queen had informed him when he had dared to ask her if the Neverseen was working with the sirens.
The answer was no. They were just a group who wanted something else. Something more.
Even though the sirens assured Fitz that they weren't working together with the Neverseen, they still hadn't earned his trust.
It was hard to figure out if they were lying or not. Honestly they were excellent at the whole deceiving vibe stuff.
I mean, there was a LITERAL poster that said, "If lying was a job, we would be rich" in the throne room of the castle.
It was 'utterly impossible' as Alyssa had told Fitz, to trust a 'mere elf boy' to achieve the siren's main goal.
Revenge.
"It was hard for Ariel to train you, too, you know! All you did was blabber!" Alyssa had told him on his final day of practice.
"If there was even a smidgen of doubt that I could do this, then why am I here, huh?" he remembered retorting back.
But she had only scoffed, "Your arrogance blinds you. All boys, so ignorant!"
It took all his willpower not to retaliate her comment with anything, but he managed to.
A few other siren generals were glaring at him as usual, but Fitz didn't mind it anymore.
The day after he had become a general, he had met Adreve, the startling assassin. She dressed herself sorta like a ninja turtle. Fitz only noticed this because he recalled how Sophie had described a ninja turtle. Except, instead of a green-brownish shell, she had faded gray armor. Surprisingly not black like most of the other generals.
And when he had asked Ariel why, she said that grey was easier to blend into surroundings more than black.
Adreve never showed her face, and kept everything except her eyes covered.
Her eyes were what were so 'startling' about her. They were bright green and they lit up like flames in the darkness.
Fitz wondered if she could see in the dark because of them.
Night vision would be helpful.
Even though Adreve was pretty cool and all, Fitz wasn't too pleased to work with her.
First of all, she barely talked. No, seriously. Fitz wasn't kidding. He had only heard her voice once, when she had said her name to open up the door to a room. He assumed it was her own room? Actually, he didn't know, but it didn't matter really.
Her voice was a sort of rough-but-silky kind of voice?
Anyways, he also didn't want to work with her because she was pretty savage.
Like, he had heard rumors that she was one of the most feared Siren generals since some guy named Ellizar.
And even though he wanted to be fierce, he didn't want to work with someone who would probably kill him even if he didn't WALK right!
And because of HER, Fitz was starting to develop some MAJOR anxiety issues.
But, he might have to do it anyway. It wasn't his choice.
It was the King and Queen's choice.
Though it was still undecided, he was quite sure that he was going to have to work with the infamous Adreve.
He had started to walk toward the throne room to ask their Majesties whether they had made their choice yet, when he heard a screeching noise. There were several others milling about, but Fitz didn't see any fear in their eyes. So, maybe they didn't hear the noise?
Or maybe there was just nothing to fear?
He cautiously took another few steps, but then he heard the noise again.
This time it was deafening. Fitz was surprised he hadn't become deaf yet as he staggered backwards, his back hitting the rock walls.
And then the shadow peeked around the corner of the wall where Fitz had just been standing.
His eyes widened and his head throbbed in pain, but he leaned forward, ready for combat, when the shadow peeled off of the wall and jumped up into the air, getting ready to pounce onto him.
