What does the future hold?

Trigger warning: Suicidal thoughts, anxiety, insecurity, mild self-harm

You walked into class, sitting in your usual seat next to Reki. You had had a crush on him for a couple of years now, but were far too nervous to ever talk to him much. He always made an effort to talk to you, though. Today he didn't say anything, which you tried not to take personally, but what if you'd made him mad? What if he hated you? What if-

"Hey y/n! Sorry, you were so quiet today I didn't notice you come in! What's up?" His bright cheery voice quickly dispelling all your fears.

"Oh um, not much, haha..." you smiled awkwardly, giving him double thumbs up. He laughed and nudged your shoulder lightly.

"Same here, just work and skateboarding and stuff, by the way, I drew something really cool yesterday, wanna see?"

As you made your way home, you thought about the conversation you were gonna have with your parents. Your grades weren't necessarily bad, and they weren't upset about them, but they wanted to make sure you weren't getting too far behind. Lately, they'd been bringing it up nearly daily, and it was really wearing your already-low confidence down.  You were worrying more and more about the future, with college getting closer and a relationship you wanted with Reki, but were too scared to initiate. You thought, for not the first time, that it would be so much easier and less scary to just, not be anymore.

"I'm home." You called out as you stepped in the door. Looking around you noticed a note on the table.

"We've gone out, you can make what you want for dinner, make sure you do your homework! We love you, we'll be back by 10."

You sighed and went up to your room. By the time you made it to the top of the stairs,  you were slightly out of breath, reminding you of your, in your eyes, less-than-ideal body. Looking down at your body, you felt sad and wished you were as pretty as the other girls in your class. As you got out your homework, your anxiety increased further, your breaths beginning to borderline on hyperventilation. Your fingers began to absentmindedly scratch at your skin, and as you saw the skin begin to peel off, you calmed down and felt some twisted feeling of balance, as if you deserved these marks. Once you were satisfied it would scar and your breathing returned to normal, you made your way to the living room to distract yourself.

Unfortunately, or fortunately for you, a knock on the door interrupted your path to the room. You opened the door and there stood Reki in all his red-headed glory.

"Hey, um, I was just wondering, wait whoa, what happened to your hand? That wasn't there a couple hours ago?" He grabbed your hand and inspected your wound.

"Oh-um-it's nothing-uh-" you stuttered out, completely overwhelmed.

"No hold on that's not nothing. C'mon, let's go clean that up." He pulled you gently by the hand to the bathroom, where he rinsed and cleaned it, finishing with a bandaid and a soft kiss over the bandaid.

"Now. Tell me what happened. That looked like a scratch mark." Your head dropped.

"Uhm, yeah that's what it is, but it's no big deal, really! I'm fine!" You smiled as best as you could, giving him thumbs up again. He sighed and pulled you into a hug.

"If you don't want to tell me, that's fine. It's your business, but I want you to know that I really like you, you're so kind, and beautiful, and your smile is so bright. I love how you do your best in social situations, even though it scares the crap out of you. And you're so smart, like, I could never compare! C'mon." He chuckled into your hair. Tears had started dripping down your face, soaking into his hoodie. You clutched him close, never wanting him to let go.

"Thank you, I really needed that." You croaked out. "And for the record, I like you too." You could feel him smile into your shoulder, his hand running through your hair.

"Now, let's get you all better, yeah?" He asked, as he gently pulled away. He spent the rest of the night spoiling you and making you laugh every chance he got. You couldn't believe you'd found someone like him, and over the next days, to weeks, to months, to years, your self-confidence grew and flourished, just as your love for Reki did.
