My dad drove me to the diner down the street from our high school and dropped me off at 5:30.

"You sure they're here?" He asks as I step out of the car.

"Hi Mr. Benedict!" Jay excitedly says as she walks up to the car.

"Yeah dad." I laugh. "I'm sure they're here."

"Hurry up Carli!" Jay yells from the door. "Nate's already here!"

"And you're spending the night at Jay's afterwards?" My dad asks.

"Yeah. I'll text mom what time to pick me up tomorrow."

"Okay." He rolls up the window and pulls away.

"CARLI." Jay yells again.

"I'M COMING!" I yell back and run over to the door.

*FAST FORWARD TO DANCE*

I stood by the tables they had set up in the back of the gym talking to some of my friends when I heard a slow song on.

"Will you dance with me?" Nate asked.

"Sure-" I started to say and turn around at the same time and when I fully turned around, I realized he was talking to Jay.

My jaw clamped shut as I spun back around.

"Y'know we're supposed to be sharing him as a date?!" I angrily say to Kate, one of my other friends.

"Oh honey," she starts.

"He hasn't said one word to me after we left the restaurant! And then he has the guts to ask her to dance with her in front of me!" I exclaim.

"What difference does it make if he did that? You don't even like him like that." Kate replies casually.

"I know that! But I told him to leave her alone!"

"Wow. Talk about defying orders from the queen." She says sarcastically.

"I am not queen. That stuff is so overrated." I turn my head to look for Nate and Jay, and then when I spot them I glare a little bit before Jay notices.

"I just wish this night was over, y'know? It reminds me of homecoming." I shake my head and turn my attention back to Kate.

"What was wrong with homecoming?" She asks. "We had a ton of fun!"

"Yeah I guess. But I didn't have as much fun because I didn't have a date and it was my birthday."

"A lot of us didn't have dates!" Kate exclaims. "It's okay."

"It wasn't everyone else's birthday." I reply with a scowl.

"If you wanna dance, we can!" She suggests.

"Nah, it's almost over anyway. Listen I gotta go get my stuff out of the concession stand before they close up, but tonight was fun!" I say over my shoulder as I start to walk towards it.

"Bye!" Kate calls after me.

*I promise it'll get better!*
