The beautiful sound of the hounds baying was like music to my ears. To me it was the most beautiful sound ever created. The way it danced with the wind was enough to put a ballerina to shame.

I pinpointed the sound. It was coming from the mountain across the valley. I could see the whole mountain side due to the almost full moon out tonight.

"Nevada!" My fathers voice cut the blissful silence.

"Over here!" I ran towards his voice and eventually bumped into him.

"There you are! Where are the hounds?" He looks around as if he's suddenly going to see them.

"There on the mountain yonder the valley" he has a confused look on his face and starts to ponder the new information.

"I could've sworn I heard a hound over towards the lake." we think about this for a minute. I laugh when I figure it out.

"I bet you Bruno got off track again" my fathers face brightens up. He try's to look mad.

"That darned pup; I'll go find him" he sighed loudly and started towards the lake.

"Oh and Nevada, your mother wants you home by two" I sigh.

"Fine, I'll meet you back there" I turn and leave, I softly chuckle when I hear my father crash though the undergrowth.

I worried about Bruno for a minute and told myself that dad would find him. they would be snug in the little wooden cabin by the time I got home.

I checked my watch, "It's only twelve" the sound of the hounds cut short my thinking. They sounded like they were headed my direction across the valley.

"Oh no" I've been caught in the middle of a chase before and it was not fun. The darn raccoon attacked me and next was the dogs. lets just say I did come out of that unscarred.

The hounds were coming closer. I was petrified, I couldn't move! Suddenly the hounds veered right, away from me.

"Yes" I shouted, but my excitement was quickly diminished when I heard a twig snap somewhere in front of me.

I took a step back. As I did birds erupted from the bushes and flew away.

I took another step back. The shadows flittered across the forest floor, I frantically searched them. I felt my heart start to speed up when I heard heavy breathing about ten feet in front of me.

I took off. I ran for all I was worth. I could hear footsteps chasing after me in pursuit, but that only made me run faster.

I reached a clearing and immediately started for the other side. In the process I tripped on a stone. I got up with bloody knees and torn pants, but at least I got up. I ran/limped towards the other end of the clearing. I had just made it to the forest when my hair caught on a tree branch.

"No!" I screamed. I felt something cold on my cheek and reached up to touch it; I didn't even know I was crying.

I turned around to await my follower, and after what seemed like hours I heard a twig snap. My heart started to race and I tried to get away. Instead I let out a whimper of pain. Something growled in the shadows. I froze. What stepped into the moonlight made me gasp. I was a goner.
