Luke

Voices.

I heard voices around me.

I slowly opened my eyes.

Too bright!

I closed my eyes again.

Am I in heaven?

Is that why it's so bright?

"I think he's waking up!" I heard someone whisper. It was definitely not anyone I knew. Maybe it was an angel. Maybe I really am dead.

"Goddamn it turn off the light!" An all too familiar voice hissed. "He's probably blind by now! The lights fucking bright-"

"Watch your mouth young man. You're still not off the hook with me." I recognise this voice as my mother's.

I slowly cracked open my eyes, scanning the room around me. I was in a hospital bed, an IV cord on my arm was pumping an unknown substance into my body. I looked down at my arms seeing fading scars and a few bandages here and there. I also had a cannula hooked up to me, making sure I was breathing right. When I moved around I could feel the sticky unpleasantness of heart monitors taped to my chest.

"Luke?" My mother sobbed, moving towards my bed faster than I'd ever seen her move. "How are you feeling?"

"My head hurts, but I'm fine." I mumbled, avoiding the stares of my mother and the person I'd least like to see: Ashton.

Ashton moved his chair closer to my bed, attempting to take my hand but I retracted before he could even get near me. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have done this to you. I didn't know-"

"It's okay Ashton." I assured, giving the curly headed boy a sad smile. "I just want to know how long I was out. I don't want to miss anymore school-"

My mom started sobbing harder, making me give her a confuse look. "Eight months. You were in a coma for eight months." She said quietly.

You know the feeling when it seems as if your whole world turns upside down and you don't know what to believe anymore? That's what I was feeling, only multiplied by a million and magnified under the world's largest microscope. That's what I felt like.

"Baby-" Ashton started.

"Don't 'baby' me." I snapped. "You're over me and you know it."

"I'll give you two some space." My mom said awkwardly, walking out of the hospital room and closing the door behind her with a definite click.

"Baby I didn't mean to do this. I was drunk and-"

"Save it!" I screamed, sitting straight up in my bed. "You made me do this! Everything you say when you're drunk is what you mean when you're not! I know you! At least I thought I did."

"I didn't mean any of it. I thought you were my ex girlfriend. I saw her when I was out and I thought you were her. I promise I didn't mean any of it." Ashton assured, catching me off guard and taking my hand in his much larger one.

I sighed, leaning back again. I was starting to develop a headache from all the sudden movements. "Then who was that girl? Who was it? How can you explain that?"

Ashton chuckled, squeezing my hand. "My ex girlfriend, the one who I mistakes you for, she hacked my accounts. Those were old pictures. I swear it wasn't anything to worry about. She really is possessive."

"I tried to tell you before. You just insisted that I was just jealous that you were her's first." I scoffed.

"But baby, I believe you now. I promise I will fight for you any time I need to. I promise nothing will ever happen like that to you again."

I sighed. "But what if I do it again? What will you fight for then?"

Ashton smiled and kissed my forehead. "Then we'll get through this together."

"Do you promise?" I asked seriously.

"I'll fight for you for as long as I live." He promised.

And for once, I believed him.
