Jason was awoken to his two siblings fighting. He tried to brush it off and go back to sleep, but he couldn't because the screaming and fighting got louder. After a few minutes, he gave up on getting any more sleep and sat up in bed.

He groaned as he blindly reached for his black-rimmed glasses and stood up. He made his way to the bathroom and washed up, then got dressed. He went down the stairs and quickly grabbed his bag and a waffle. He then sat at the table putting the final touches on his essay for English class. Once he finished, he glanced up at the clock and called out to his mother. He quickly shoved the paper in his bag and went to put his shoes on as his mom ran down the steps wearing her scrubs.

He quickly runs out the door and calls out, "Shotgun," as he gets into the passenger seat. His mom and siblings run out behind him, his mom smiling fondly at her oldest son, as the middle child, Tyler, complained loudly about his brother always getting shotgun.

As they pull out of the driveway, Jason looks out his window and smiles at a girl he knew from his social studies class.

Stella only spares him a glance then continues on her way, pulling her hood up to protect her from the snow and strong January wind. She walked with her head down as the wind blew her long black hair in her face. As she continued and saw everyone else driving to school in their car with their family or riding the bus, she felt that she was the only person walking to school.

She loved her parents but also resented them. Because while she knew that they cared, they were always focused on work. She had been walking to school on her own since the 6th grade, and they had never once come to pick her up.

Stella wipes any thoughts of her parents out of her mind and keeps going. As the snow got heavier, the school came into her view. She looked both ways as she scurried across the street, trying to reach the building as soon as possible. She quickly opened the door and put her hood down as she basked in the warmth of the school.

She kept her head down as she made her way to her locker. When she got there she made eye contact with Zadie Mellow, the most popular girl in school. Big mistake.
