The beheaded spirit inside my air-conditioned room began to groan and howl dangerously while I began to tremble in fear making a fool out of myself in front of the young woman sitting before me. I urged to call someone in my room to continue the investigation but I did not want any of my employees to face the wrath of this headless spirit who was pulling out my hair from my scalp. It was too painful but I had to overlook my pains to know the truth.
Priya Vashisht was eyeing me suspiciously as I rushed towards the washroom in my cabin while the terrifying spirit followed me. “Stop it", I hissed as I closed the door of the washroom.
“You should not talk about that day", the spirit of Ansh Awasthy snarled menacingly as his muscular hands went to my shoulders and squeezed them hard. I felt as if someone squeezed out the life inside me, it was so damn, excruciatingly painful.
“Hunt those monsters who killed me", the headless spirit hissed and warned me, “And leave my girlfriend”.
I wanted to scream at him and beat him for harassing a poor girl but I was aware of my physical capabilities which stood no where in front of this paranormal spirit.
“Let me know everything and I promise I will hunt those men and ensure justice to you", I pleaded calming the spirit in the process. Washing my face with cold water to remove the traces of fear, I walked out of the washroom only to find the headless spirit of Ansh Awasthy sitting beside Priya.
“Poor girl", I muttered under my breath and sat on my ergonomic office chair.“Sorry for the delay, Ms. Vashisht”, I began the conversation and gestured her to speak.
With several unasked questions about my recent behavior on her face, Priya began narrating the events of her birthday. “It was 3rd October. I had planned to visit my cousin Vihani in Gurgaon and have a girls day out but that demon destroyed my day.”
“Ms. Priya, why do you insist in talking in riddles?” I asked folding my arms across my chest.
Mumbling a ‘sorry', she continued, “It was Sunday. Early in the morning, that devil Ansh came outside my house after partying all night and insisted to spend my day with him.”
“I told him that I am spending my day with my cousin which was followed by a long, humiliating argument where I was termed as ‘characterless' and what not in front of my roommate”, Priya cried while the spirit of Ansh Awasthy groaned perhaps, in guilt.
“To end up the argument, I gave in. Lifelessly, I dressed myself in a pink colored tunic as per the demand of that maniac and got ready. I canceled my plans with Vihani and informed her thereby, disappointing her. Ansh heard this conversation on speaker just because he wanted to be sure that I was actually talking to Vihani, not some Vihan. It was terribly humiliating. I had never imagined myself to be a puppet but I was helplessly turned into one.” Priya lamented.
“What happened that night?” I asked getting frustrated. I wondered if Priya could actually kill Ansh or not. Though her timidity spoke otherwise, but her anger naturally told that she could commit that crime in a fit of rage. However, I deduced my suspicions to be wrong because the murder of Ansh Awasthy was not an impromptu crime, it was a pre-planned murder which is why my team was cluelessly trying to search evidences about his disappearance.
“We spent the whole day together. He insisted on clicking pictures but because of sunlight falling on our faces, the photographs were not coming good enough to be posted on his social media accounts so he smashed his Apple IPhone and broke it into several pieces. I was terrified looking at his insane behavior but I had no option except staying quiet.” Priya confessed while the heart of headless ghost began to ooze out the bubbles of a mercury-red liquid from his heart-like organ.
I, on the other hand, took no time to realize that Ansh Awasthy, the spoilt brat of a rich, industrialist dad, was insecure that Priya would leave him and instead of winning her with love, he wanted to tie her up with himself which was breaking her from inside.
“Later that night, my roommate Kirti left for Jaipur, her hometown. Her father had got a heart attack and was hospitalized. I was supposed to be all alone at home that night when Ansh offered to stay. I denied outright. Being a spinster, I staying all alone with a man would attract unwanted attention in my society but when he accused me that I would be calling someone for night, I was mortified.” Priya croaked.
“And in your mortifications, you gave in again", I muttered partly under irritation and partly under disappointment. I realized Ansh had realized that Priya would give into his demands if he would comment on her character and hence, he had been maligning her character every now and then.
“Unfortunately yes, I did commit that mistake”, Priya lamented. Sipping some water, she wiped her tears of humiliation and continued, “We had retired into separate rooms when my phone rang. It was Mr. Negi, my forty year old senior from office calling me. It was just nine at night. He had perhaps, seen a notification on my social media account about my birthday.”
Apart from whimpers and sobs of Priya, the room of my office echoed with growls and groans of the headless spirit while Priya drank some water relieving her parched throat. Wiping her tears, she hiccupped, “Mr. Mishra, trust me, Mr. Negi wished me and we had a small talk".
“While I was talking to him about his kids and wife whose voices could be heard in the backdrop, Ansh began to knock at the door fiercely. Ending the conversation abruptly, I disconnected the phone and opened the door only to find an enraged Ansh.” Priya confessed with helplessness and fear in her voice.😎😎😎
