"Mom! I'm heading out!" Ruth reached for her jacket. "I found a fox yesterday and I should bring it something to eat before it starves to death!" She yelled up the stairs as she quickly pulled her scarlet hair into a bun.
A tall middle-aged woman stood at the top of the stairs. She wore gray sweat pants and an old men's t-shirt with her favorite band's name written across the chest. The shirt was too large for her, it used to belong to Ruth's father who passed away 6 years earlier. Mother wore it on the days she missed him the most. "Of course Honey, but please be safe out there, you know it gets cold outside after dark;" The woman walked down the stairs and towards Ruth as she slipped on her boots. "Please hurry back, I don't want to get another phone call from your teacher tomorrow because you forgot to do your homework again."
Ruth turned to face her mother standing on the landing. "You know me. I'm always back before dark." Ruth grinned and hugged her mother before walking back to slide open the patio doors. A rush of cold air flooded her lungs and stung her cheeks. A small bag was clutched in one hand and the other shivered in her pocket as she made her way down the trail behind her house.
She walked for nearly fifteen minutes before reaching the young fox's hollow. Small trails branched out between the trees, and little whimpers could be heard from inside the hollowed out tree. Small yellow eyes appeared from the darkness. "Hello Mr. Fox," Ruth knelt down onto the snow and slowly removed this morning's leftovers from the paper bag. "I brought something for you." The small creature stepped into the light and tilted its head. She grabbed a piece of bread and gently tossed it closer. The fox growled for a moment as the bread bounced in front of it. He sniffed it cautiously. "It's alright little guy." She assured him. "I won't hurt you." A second pair of golden eyes appeared from behind Mr. Fox. This time to a beautiful silver laced fox, her black and gray coat shimmered against the snow. She was the brave one that grabbed the bread. "Well, aren't you a pretty one." Ruth looked at her, amazed that such a beautiful arctic fox could have traveled this far south.
She stayed with the young pair until the sky began to darken. She followed her footsteps back through the trees and towards home. Merely feet away from re-entering her backyard, the snow moved on the path ahead of her. She stopped. Too dark now to see it clearly, but it wasn't the time for her to take risks. She waited a few moments until it moved again, but this time it whimpered. Ruth took a few steps forward and knelt down onto the snow once more. She pushed the snow to reveal a small ball of white fur, and a tail, and some ears. It whimpered again, raising its head to face her, shining blue eyes pierced through the darkness and into her heart.
Ruth lifted the little creature and walked onto her porch, lifted the little creature into the light to discover it was a fragile little wolf puppy. Ruth looked back towards the trees, cautiously scanning for its mother. Ruth held the shivering creature against her chest and opened the patio doors.
"You were out long. I was going to send out a search party to get you." Mother was sitting on the couch with a book in her hands.
"Well, I don't think I'll be able to focus on my homework."
"Oh? And why's that?" She put down her book and looked over to see Ruth holding the small puppy in her arms. "Please don't tell me you're bringing another stray into the house."
"Well, not exactly." Ruth walked towards her mother so she could get a better look. "It's weak and cold, I also couldn't find the mother anywhere." She lifted her jacket that covered the pup's face to reveal it had fallen asleep in her arms. "Can we at least keep it for the night?" Ruth pleaded.
"Just for tonight."
"Thanks, Mom!" Ruth nearly jumped with joy. She removed her jacket and made her way upstairs. "I think I'll call you Enola. Enola Jackson, Welcome to the family."
