The next day after the incident with Anne, she didn't turn up to school which Timothy while had a hint of worry was actually happy about. Because even if he swore to not speak with Gilbert, he just didn't want Gilberts attention on anyone other than him.

Timothy was sat on his desk waiting for Phillips to arrive when Gilbert came in unusually late. Annoyingly however, he looked over to Anne's desk and furrowed his eyes brows so Timothy just turned back round and started reading.
What he didn't notice though, was that right after Gilbert looked at Anne's desk, he looked at his best friends desk with a pained expression and sat down in front.

It was now lunch, and Timothy had just immediately walked out of the building and sat near the stream behind. He didn't do much but sit looking at the running water for a few minutes before a figure came round behind him.

"Tim."

His head snapped round and glared at him, "Gilbert."

"Why did you run off i—"

"Can you just stop."

"What do you m—"

"Thanks for the talk, but i will take my leave." Timothy said spinning on his heel but was stopped by a hand on his arm.

"Fine but we will talk after school and don't you dare run away like last time."

"Fine." And with that Timothy left a fuming Gilbert to preoccupy himself with his own thoughts.

The school day past by quicker than Timothy thought, much to his anger. So when Phillips dismissed the class he tensely rolled his eyes and walked outside of his school and into a field with Gilbert walking after him like a lost dog.

Timothy turned round to look at Gilbert, "so what do you want to talk about?"

"Obviously why you have been avoiding me? Look i am so sorry for leaving you behind that day but—"

"But, But, But, But, But! Do you really think that a sorry will be enough for me to forgive you, let alone an excuse!" He snapped.

"No, i just want to make things right! Please tell me what i can do!"

"You know," Timothy looked out at the forest, burning from the sun, "it felt really shit when your best friend forgets you, and leaves you, for some girl you have only met for 3 seconds. And at that forgot for hours, not even minutes! And i know i am just being really petty right now but it hurt Gilbert! It bloody hurt!"

The other was in silence, he didn't know how to respond and was too busy trying to find his words that he missed the tear from his best friends cheek fall, and if he did he would of most definitely came round and hugged him.

"I...i, i don't know what to say... i have hurt you and an apology would lesser than the cause... i—" His eyes flickered at two places in the field floor.

"I just want you to promise that you wont ignore me or forget me again for a girl. Maybe even, i don't know speak up for me when i am getting whipped?"

"I didn't know what to do for gods sake! Maybe i had more time to process what was happening for when one is being shouted at than i do when one is being whipped! Maybe i was too in shock to even move my finger! Maybe my mouth couldn't open! Tim, i don't know what happened... i was just watching you get whipped and although watching felt like an eternity it just was also so quick and i didn't have time!"

"Why couldn't you of turned round to help me with my stinging injuries!"

"I don't know okay! I don't know..."

The both were already crying their eyes out, and while Gilbert was practically on his knees, Tims legs stood stronger than ever.

Perhaps Timothy's pride and anger didn't let him back down or Gilbert's guilt and inability to put his feelings and memories into words but the argument was rough and long.

However Timothy couldn't stand to see Gilbert crying any longer, because he had never seen Gilbert cry and if he was sad he was good at not breaking down so he gave in and engulfed his best friend in a hug, "just please promise me, please promise that it wont happen again. I can put the past in the past but just please promise me this." He said at Gilberts chest.

"I promise Tim," his hand ruffled through Timothy's hair to calm him down as by now Gilbert's tears were to no longer be seen.

Later Gilbert lay in his bed, just thinking.

Why?

Why did i break down?

Why did i cry so much?

I never cry that much... why did i cry that much with Tim? I mean he is my best friend but wasn't that crying a bit too much?
It felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest...
