Chapter 01: A Glimpse of the Unknown
The morning casts a gloomy veil over the house, with the gentle patter of rain against the window pane creating a melancholic rhythm. A chill seeped through the glass, numbing Libertia's fingertips as she stirred awake. The rain had left the streets glistening with a slick sheen, and the earthy scent of petrichor lingered in the air. Libertia woke with a heavy sense of déjà vu, the weight of routine settling over her like a suffocating blanket. She knew what today held—another medical check-up.
Her mother's gentle voice cut through the fog of her thoughts. "It's time to get up, Tia."
Libertia mustered a weak smile, the kind that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Can I skip today's check-up, Mom?" Her voice wavered with an undercurrent of anxiety, the plea barely concealing her fear of what the day would entail.
Her mother's smile faded, concern etching lines across her brow. "We're not having this conversation, Tia. This is for your own good."
Defeated, Libertia nodded silently and retreated to the bathroom. The ritual of preparation felt like a routine she couldn't escape, much like the illness that shadowed her every move. The cold water cascaded over her like icy fingers, an unwelcome reminder of her vulnerability. Each droplet stood in stark contrast against the warmth of her skin, tracing the faint scar on her palm where resilience had left its mark—a silent testament to battles fought and fears conquered.
After showering, Libertia put on her usual outfit—a soft, worn-in grey t-shirt, snug-fitting jeans that hugged her curves, and well-loved sneakers. The familiarity of her clothing provided a fleeting sense of comfort, like a small anchor amid the storm of uncertainty that gripped her heart.
Each step downstairs echoed with the weight of anticipation, the echo of her mother's words tightening a knot of dread in her stomach. Her brothers, Luke and Nyx, were engrossed in a serious conversation with their parents. She inwardly sighed, expecting their usual overbearing concern.
'They'll probably try to babysit me again,' Libertia thought, a hint of frustration flickering in her mind.
She approached quietly, eavesdropping on their conversation, until Luke's sharp gaze caught her. His eyes bore into hers, a silent reprimand that spoke volumes.
Nyx, ever the peacemaker, broke the tension with a knowing grin. "You snuck out again last night, didn't you?" His voice was hushed, a mischievous grin tugging at his lips.
"Yeah," Libertia admitted quietly, glancing towards Luke, who watched her like a hawk. "I needed some air."
Her mother intervened, a touch of weariness in her voice as she gently touched Libertia's cheek. "Your brothers will accompany you today, sweetie. Your father and I have commitments."
She nodded, her gaze flickering to Luke, who stood stoic beside her. "It's alright, Mom," Libertia managed, her thoughts already racing ahead to the inevitable lecture from her older brother, a mix of resentment and gratitude swirling within her. She knew Luke's concern stemmed from love, but sometimes his protective instincts felt suffocating, like a shield she couldn't lower.
Luke's voice sliced through her reverie, sharp as glass, his concern visible in the furrow of his brow and the tight set of his jaw as they made their way to the car. "You sneaked out again last night," he stated calmly, though the underlying tension was palpable. "And you skipped your medication from the last check-up."
Panic bubbled in Libertia's chest, and a thousand excuses poised on her lips. "I just... I n-needed some time to breathe," she stammered, her voice catching on to the unspoken weight of guilt.
