                Skylar

The darkness swallowed me. Not allowing me to escape. I was a prisoner in its grasps. Any light that was there was sucked out to leave only blackness. The absence of light.

Colors swirled around me. Hues of blues, purples, greys, and greens mixed together in no particular pattern. Just swirling around me like the ocean depths, letting the light shine one second and then the darkness swallowing it up again in another.

I was floating in an abyss of my thoughts.

Only my thoughts……were not pretty ones.

Mountains rose around me, purple clouds covered the sky. The wind blowing my brown hair into my face causing it to whip me again and again relentlessly.

Walls of an old apartment rose around me. It was like watching an old water-painting become an image with each brush stroke of the artist. It rose around me caging me in. Everything was musty and dank and moldy.

Pieces of furniture came around me making it looked like someone had lived here a long time ago, but they hadn't kept things clean. A medium sized beige sofa with holes and scuff markers all over appeared in front of me. An old lamp came to appearance behind me.  And the ceiling light illuminated everything. Or at least tried to. It was so dusty and old that light could barely get through, but it was enough to see and function with it.

The people who lived here either didn’t care, or hadn't been here at all.

Then, a little girl in a black t-shirt and jeans came running past me. She kept looking back to see something, but I didn’t see anything. She was trembling as she ran, but I didn’t know why. She had reached the other side of the wall and had nowhere to go, so she turned around and just stood there. She took a stance which made her look like she was about to fight someone, but all I saw was empty air.

A man suddenly materialized in front of me in mid step. He was big, muscular, and looked like someone you definitely didn’t want to meet in an alley way at night time. He was walking towards the girl like he had just cornered his prey and was getting ready for the kill. His eyes were narrowed, his muscles were flexed, and he had this evil smirk on his face like he was going to enjoy what was going to happen next.

Only……I didn’t have the faintest idea of what was going to happen and it made me nervous.

The man kept getting closer to the girl until he was standing directly in front of her. She had paled so much that she looked like a bed sheet. And everything about her looked tiny and small compared to the Hulk that was looming over her.

He started to yell at her, making her cry and slide down the wall, but I couldn’t hear anything. I tried to go to the girls aid, but I hit a wall. It was a glassy, watery wall which allowed me to see everything that was happening but I couldn’t hear anything or interfere with what was going on. I kept banging on it, trying to break it but nothing worked. The girl couldn’t hear me and I couldn't help.

The man continued to yell at her, and she started to cry harder. But all it did was make the man get madder.

And finally, he snapped.

He started to kick the girl anywhere he could. In the stomach, the back, in her forearms which she was using to cover and protect her face, anywhere that was flesh and blood. He dragged her off the ground by her collar, and pinned her to the wall. He was sneering at her and she was trying to get out of the choke hold that he had developed on her just moments ago. She was trying to claw his hands off of her throat but to no avail. And then she finally managed to rake him across the face with her nails.

He flung her across the room where she landed just under the lamp choking for breathe. He was howling in agony and holding his now bleeding face with one of his hands. He kept on advancing at the girl, but she was still on her side holding her throat which was now red and coughing for air.

He kept on walking towards her, probably to punish her for what she did. But before he could take another step, the girl took the lamppost and swung it hitting him by the knee cap causing him to fall to the ground in pain.

She jumped up from the ground still wheezing, and took another swing at the Hulk. She hit him in the head this time but not as hard because she wasn’t strong enough to hold and swing the lamppost.

His eyes rolled back into his head and he crumbled to the ground unconscious. Blood was seeping from the side of his head where the girl had hit him.

After a few moments, the girl finally realized what she had just done and she didn’t hesitate to run into a room and grab a luggage. I'm guessing she ran into her room and grabbed her already packed luggage because of the way she was having to lean to carry it. But she made her way to the front door and left the apartment not looking back.

The walls of the apartment shattered around me as the real world flooded into my thoughts. It felt like I was falling and it made me shoot up into a sitting position from the sensation.

And that’s when it hits me……..

That little girl was me when I first ran away from my abusive foster parents.

I look around me trying to figure out where I am because I remember losing consciousness on the street right after I ran away from my last foster parents but nothing looks familiar. All I see is gray walls around me and I'm lying on a thin mattress…….

Where the heck am I?

Just as I think that, I see them. A pair of blue eyes as clear as the sea, and as stormy as the ocean.
