I clocked in for work when the diner I work got held hostage and the NCIS were involved because the perpetrators involved shot one of their men. It lasted till midnight and the authorities breached the place. The bad guys were shot and we were allowed to go home. Dimitri was the one who interviewed me. I recognized him but he looked at me like I was a total stranger. I wished him goodnight when he blurted that I looked familiar and I promised him that we have never met. This seemed to convince him that we have met. He insisted on driving me home. He kept talking about random places but he never mentioned the delinquent school. He seemed to have forgotten about the place. He finally gave up and wished me a good night.
The next morning I got to work and Victor walked in with flowers for me and I thanked him but he wasn't the type I should be dating so I thanked him. This seemed to frost his shorts but he let it go and chased after another waitress.
Dimitri showed up during lunch hour and he kept staring at me the entire time trying to figure out who I was. I actually wished I could have stopped myself from showing off. I just continued work and finished my shift without incident.
I had gotten a new identity. I had looked through the obituaries and found someone with the name Alice and the same age as me and assumed her identity. No one was the wiser. I even paid a teenager to make my ID legit. He painstakingly did it without question. I paid him extra for his haste and finesse.
I sat down and drew a cell phone and a number. I dialed it and Aby answered. She was happy that I was ok. She and Ben got married a few weeks ago. She asked me where I was and she insisted that she was moving here to be close to me. I explained Dimitri's situation and she told me he had an accident and lost his memory. They moved the following week. It was a fabulous change of pace.
She brought a record of Dimitri in the delinquent school and I read top to bottom. I kept it hidden in my room.
The next week the Feds showed up in the diner and they were chatting intensely that they didn't notice I was not far from them. I had faked my death so they had stopped their search. I finished my work and walked to the store to get supplies for my drawings. Abu met me outside with her groceries.
Aby asked me to move in with them so I could be safer. In the end, I moved into the guest room. We each assigned chores to one another that we do as a way of reminding us that we should be humble. We will go on adventures whenever possible but we had to be responsible too.
Aby was feeling sick so I took the day off and played nurse. We had fun till one of the neighbors a retired full bird colonel was killed. Ben was getting ready for work when NCIS came to our door and asked if he had seen anything. He explained that his wife has been sick so he hasn't left the house in four days. They asked to see Aby so he let them in. They saw that she was out for the count they apologized and left. The boy next bolted when he saw the authorities and Dimitri hit his head trying to catch the kid. He got his memory back and he was shocked that he was working for the government. He kept his mouth shut but everyone felt that he was a little odd. He explained that he found the missing pieces of his memory. His team was happy but they were no closer to finding the culprit. When he saw Ben he ran to him. They hugged and gave each other high fives. He looked up and saw me. He immediately ran to embrace me but I hid from him. He called out to me but I remained hidden. He knew why I didn't come out but this didn't dishearten him. He kept looking and swore he will protect me from harm. I wish I could trust him but I had my doubts that he would help. I can neither confirm nor deny what he was saying because I had been taking those horrible pills to keep my gift at bay. I can't go around screaming because what I see is heart-stopping. I wanted to be normal. So the last week, I have washed them down unceremoniously.
Dimitri found me quaking with fear hiding in the linen closet and he scooped me out without a second thought. He promised to take care of me. I asked him about the woman I saw hopping on his bike. He laughed, "That's my older sister Irina. Did you think it was my girlfriend? Even in my memory loss I never wanted anyone else. When I saw you at the diner. I knew I had to be close to you. I tried to remember where we met but it never occurred that I was there of all places. I am so sorry I frightened you." I nod my head and his friends came over and asked about me. He introduced me as his fiance. They were shocked for a moment and then the congratulations came bursting in rapid succession. They asked me where I had been and he spoke on my behalf. He explained that we got engaged when we were teens but he moved away because his grandma was ill. He pressed his lips on my hand and I blushed furiously. His friends cheered but the boss came to remind them the killer was still at large. I stepped forward and explained that she should talk to Albert Beanie from across the street. He has cameras all over the neighborhood. If there is a chance to find your killer he is the one she must meet. I insisted that they get a warrant or he will destroy all footage. So they got a warrant for it and he handed it over without making a fuss. Things are about to get complicated. As friends, these guys are bound to do some digging to make sure I wasn't a felon or a convict. Since I am a known psychic my fingerprints are flagged. The moment they scan the Feds will be all over the place. And my problems will double. I prayed to God that these guys leave me in peace. Despite my prayers they still did it. I had the difficult task of deciding between taking those pills or stopping them. All things considered stopping them felt like the best option. And I was right.
