John sighed as he finally got home for work, sliding his shoes and jacket off before heading deeper into the house. He really wanted to go up to his and Alex's room and fall asleep for the next three years, but Alexander's car was in the driveway, so he should probably talk to him for a bit before succumbing to his exhaustion.
"Alex?" John called out as he walked down to the living room. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and rolled his eyes at the sheer amount of messages Peggy had sent him through the day. His phone was usually turned off when he was at work.
"In here!" Alexander called from the kitchen. John walked through the living room and into the kitchen, happy to be hit with the mouth watering scent of chicken curry and roti. He hadn't even noticed how hungry he was. "Hi honey!" Alexander smiled as John walked into the kitchen.
"Hey." He pressed a kiss to Alexander's temple, before taking a seat at one of the chairs in the connected dining room. "You visited Rachael today, right? How was she?"
Alexander smiled. "Mom's doing better. It seems like this long term treatment plan really is working."
John hummed. "And Professor Washington?"
"Dean Washington, John," Alex corrected teasingly. He set down a plate of food in front of John and snorted at the way his husband's stomach growled. "He was good. Overwhelmed, though. Thomas is trying to get him fired, to take over his spot as Dean or something like that." Alexander rolled his eyes. "I can't believe I have to work with that guy."
"You're the one who wanted to be a secretary at King's College, babe. I told you that—"
"—I had plenty of other options available, I know." He sighed as he took a seat next to John. "I guess I could quit when Washington retires. I won't have anything keeping me there, then."
John simply nodded, too busy inhaling his food to answer normally. Alexander watched him, eyes filled with adoration that still, years later, made John's stomach fill with butterflies.
"And how about you? You're still working on that big case, right?"
"Yes," John whined, holding back the urge to bang his head on the table. "Don't remind me. My client is such an ass. I'm tired."
"You're the one who wanted to be a lawyer," Alexander shrugged, taking a bite of his dinner as he nonchalantly used John's own words against him.
John grumbled. "I should've become an artist."
"You still can," Alex said, patting John's shoulder consolingly.
"I guess." John quickly finished up his dinner, getting up to wash his plate in the sink before walking back to Alexander and pressing a kiss to his lips. "I'm going to go to bed and sleep for thirty years," he whispered as Alexander moved his lips down to nip at his jaw.
Alex snorted, pulling away. "Okay, have fun doing that." John started making his way upstairs and to their bedroom as Alex called, "I'll be up in a minute!"
He smiled at the sound of his husband's voice.
