1 week. That's how long we had to learn the choreography. That's how long we had to perfect it. Perfect our moves, perfect our expressions, perfect our charisma. 1 week.
I, along with 10 other girls, each one of us representing a different company, stood in a somewhat staggered line, waiting for our fate. Which one of us lucky girls was going to be able to dance alongside Lian Huaiwei for his next concert? Yes, our face wouldn't be shown because we would have to wear a masque. We've all worked so hard, was this hard work going to be in vain?
The director stepped in the room, eyeing us each with a subtle smirk on his face.
"Tough week? We've come to a decision. The girl who will be dancing with our Xiaolian is..." he trailed off.
"Xia Li, Xia Li, Xia Li" I repeated my name in my head, hoping it was me.
"Xia Li", only this time the name wasn't coming from my head. No. It was coming from the director's mouth.
I was shocked, stunned. I sensed the girls beside me nodding in disappointment. I don't blame them. Before I even got a chance to react, he walked in. Lian Huaiwei.
"Oh my goodness is that really xiaolian?!?" I heard one of the girls beside me express in excitment.
"Hello everyone! I'm Lian Huaiwei. Xia Li, was it? Really excited to collaborate with you!" Lian Huaiwei said with a cheery tone while smiling from ear to ear.
Woah, that smile. I only ever saw it on TV, or in media pictures, never in person. How can he look so cute? That smile could light up a whole room!
"Likewise, I'm very excited, Lian laoshi (Lian teacher)" I said.
Stupid. With the way I had said it, you'd almost think I wasn't excited.
"Okay...well, the rest of you may leave. Xia Li, come in tomorrow so we can start revising choreography and decide on hair & makeup" the director told me.
I nodded, still stunned that I had been chosen. My sight was focused on the ground. I dared not to look the director in the eyes.
"Xia Li, jiayou! (Good luck Xia Li!)" Lian Huaiwei called out to me.
I smiled. "Thank you". Thank you? Seriously? That's all I could get out? Show some excitement. I was definitely excited, this is all just too real for me.
As he walked out, he blew a flying kiss. I could feel all the girls in the room squeal in thrill. So cute.
