Soul mate AU: The world is made of grays until soulmates lock eyes
(Y/N) sat in her chair, her arms resting on the desk as she stared out the window.
Her class passed with nothing eventful, nothing good enough to keep her attention.
Instead, her mind wandered.
She let it.
Let herself dive into the abyss of madness she kept too tightly under wraps. Let herself imagine a different life.
Then the bell rang and she was brought back to her reality.
"Are you alright?" Momo placed a slender hand on her shoulder, squeezing with just enough pressure to give comfort, but to (Y/N) it felt like a death sentence.
"I'm fine." She whispered, smiling up at Momo as if the sun wasn't dazzling and the world wasn't full of colors.
Momo was her best friend, both of them growing up with fat pockets and silver spoons.
But she couldn't tell her this.
She couldn't tell her that she found her soulmate and the world was no longer grey and there are colors everywhere.
So many colors (Y/N) had never known until the day she met him.
She knew their names, knew what they were called and what color was what. She knew that her favorite color was the bright blue of his flames. She knew that the moment the world snapped into place was the moment their eyes interlocked.
(Y/N) knew a lot, and yet so little.
When you meet your soulmate, the gray world you've spent your life interpreting bursts into hundreds of vibrant colors.
Some people describe it as the flip of a switch. Others said it was like the world turned in on itself before everything came into focus, now more beautiful than ever before.
When (Y/N) met her soulmate, locking eyes for the very first time, it was like little explosions inside her skull. The colors burned, her head pounding as it took in this new spectrum.
And then she passed out.
It wasn't uncommon to faint upon seeing your soulmate, the new frequencies often overwhelming the brain. It usually only lasted a moment before they would come back, blinking and absorbing the new colors.
She had awoken and found herself hauled over her soulmate's shoulder, stomping through the forest they were trapped in.
(Y/N) knew she shouldn't have stayed with him. Knew she shouldn't have let him hide her away from the battle. But she couldn't help but rationalize it. Thoughts about getting him to switch sides, or stray from the battle, or just to stay there with her.
None of it happened.
Her soulmate, whose name she learned much later, tucked her away before heading back out to join the fight.
Dabi, his name, didn't come back. Just before he left, however, he had whispered into her ear, soft and low, sending shivers through her body.
"Stay here, where it's safe. Don't come out until it's all over." He had said it as if he cared.
As if he hadn't left her all alone just so he could capture her classmate.
Still, she did as he said. She sat there and took in the colors, wondering how Dabi was so unconcerned. How he continued on despite this whole new world they could discover together.
So she sat there.
She sat there and looked on in awe at all the pretty colors. And even after all this time, Dabi's fire was still the prettiest color she's ever come to know.
