A fear of heights

"What are you doing!?" I yelled. "Hurry! Come across the bridge!"

It had been two days since we met. We had been traveling the many buildings together, avoiding masks and keeping a low profile. We decided that the best way to limit the amount of near death experiences we were probably going to have was to lay low. Not attract to much attention. But, as we were resting on the top of an office building, a mask dressed in a maid getup jumped at us, swinging some sort of miniature scythe looking thing.

"I-I cant!" Sniper mask yelled back. "You ran across it and now its moving too much!" He was staring at the bridge, head moving side to side in rhythm with the swaying, as if he was in a trance.

"What do you mean its moving too much! Walk across it or die!!" I yelled. I grabbed my gun, and aimed it past his head towards the mask. She was walking slowly, her blade at her side menacingly. Dammit, my pistol wasn't going to shoot that far.

The rifle!

He handed it to me so he could take out his pack of cigarettes. I slung it over my shoulder, and we both kind of forgot I had it.

I took it off my shoulder, aiming it at the maid mask. Sniper was still staring at the bridge, frozen.

I pulled the trigger.

"FUCKING SHIT Y/N WATCH IT!"

I blinked. I hadn't accounted for the wind. The bullet had grazed his hat, and had completely missed the maid, making a small indent in the generator box behind her.

"Sorry" I yelled. I slung it over my shoulder. Dammit.

"What are you waiting for! The bridge stopped moving! Come on!" I said. He looked up at me, shaking his head violently.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO?" I yelled.

Is he trying to get himself killed?

"I-Im afraid of heights" he yelled. I stood there in shock.

Looking back, I should've known. He always insisted on going first when we crossed the bridges. He did that, I realized, so he could go as slow as he wanted. He death gripped the wires of the "rails" of the bridge, and he would never go closer to about 10 feet from the edge of any building unless it had a clear sort of ledge.

Shit.

"Hold on!" I yelled. I grabbed the bridge rail with one hand, going as fast as I could. The bridge violently shook as I basically ran across it. Sniper backed away from the edge, jumping out of the way of the slice of her scythe.

I stopped halfway, pulling out my gun, and fired at her. She jumped out of the way, dodging my bullets one after the other. I managed to graze her arm, blood pouring out of the open wound. Here was my chance.

I aimed at her head.

Click. I pulled the trigger again. Click. Click.

Fuck. I'm out of bullets.

You never really think of those things as being a thing you need until you don't have any more left.

I put the gun in the holster on my thigh, snapping it down. Gripping the wire as hard as I could, I ran the rest of the way.

"Sniper! Come on!" I said. He looked at me, and at the bridge.

"if I get on that bridge, I'm going to die," he said, panic in his voice. I held out my hand.

"Here. Hold my hand, and close your eyes. I'll guide you." I said.
He nodded, taking his hand in mine. He stepped onto the bridge, and his breath hitched. He crushed my hand in his, the gloves suffocating my skin.

I looked behind him. The maid mask had ripped part of her dress to stop the blood. Now using her opposite hand, she charged at us with her blade.

Ambidextrous mother fucker.

I pulled sniper along with me, each sway causing him to squeeze my hand harder. We made it to the other side safely. I yanked my hand out of his, opening it and closing it in pain. I turned around. Maid lady was bookin it to get to us. I took out my knife, and started cutting at the wire on the bridge. Just as she was in range, the wire snapped.

She wobbled.

And fell.

"I'm sorry" I whispered. I watched as she fell, still as a statue, silent, smiling at me like this was the best day of her life.

I closed my eyes as she hit. Turning back, I stepped off the bridge.

"are you alright?" I said. Sniper mask was sitting there on the ground, staring at his hands.

"...yeah," He said. He got up, shakily, and I handed him his gun.

He stared at me for what seemed like forever. The light hit the mask, and I could see his eyes for a split second. There was a certain sadness in them, but from what?

He leaned in closer to me. His breath smelled of cigarettes and gum. Not the most appealing scent ever, but his proximity to me was alarming.

Oh god oh god oh god he's so close what do I do-

He wrapped his arms around me, hugging me tightly.

"Thank you." He whispered.
