I ran.
ding
How did this even begin? Ah, I'm so tired. My thighs burn.
ding
Why was I running so desperately after his broad back? I know I'll never be able to run beside him.
ding
"I need to keep up my pace with his," A quick gasp for air.
ding
"..otherwise.." A skidding stomp to halt.
ding
"..I'll fall behind." A side-glance to him.
ding
"Michael and James," Coach Flessel calls out loudly while beckoning us with the wave of her toned arm, her striped blue tracksuit rustling from where she stood across the gym.
My heart skipped a beat when I hear both our names being called side by side. Kind of like how a priest would do in a wedding--
Wait. I gasp quickly and accidentally stumble over my feet.
'What the hell am I even thinking right now..??'
Hesitantly shrugging off the strange and invading thought, I continue heading towards Coach. Spotting Michael trudging in the back of the pack, (the group of sweating animals heading towards the waterhole) I playfully sneak up behind my best friend and tackle him lightly. He surges forward - almost losing his balance. Michael's sweat smells strangely sweet; I take advantage of the split-second that we're together -hugging(?)- and take a deep breath of his natural musk, enjoying the small moment before bringing myself back into reality.
'What the hell is up with me today??'
Still questioning my sanity, I glance up at Michael's face while maintaining the strange hug-tackle position; his light brown lashes clash with his deep green eyes in confusion for a split second only to beam back into my ocean-coloured ones.
He smiles at me, eyes slightly creasing at the corners, and for some odd reason I want to beg him to stop..
"Stop being so fucking ugly, Mio..!" I tease, tapping him on the back of his head before hopping off him, suppressing the strange urge to immediately cling back on.
Michael sighs, half-smiling and rubbing where I had hit him. "Oh, shut up. At least I don't look like roadkill after these paced runs," He steps over someone's Duffle bag as I crack a smile, "unlike someone I may-or-may-not know~" Michael turns to me, offering a personalized shit-eating grin before--
"Oi, lovebirds! I've been waiting here for around two years now; where's my damned retirement money?" Coach Flessel hollers towards us. I realize that we've slowed down subconsciously due to our side banter and I quickly begin to jog to Coach. Michael tries to trip me before sprinting past me in our newly-made game of 'who can reach Coach Fossil before the archeologists'.
"An old lady's time don't come cheap y'know! It's being counted to the last second, ya' bozos." Coach called out one more time before dodging Michael's flying figure. I let out a laugh as Michael almost flies straight into the bleachers and ask, "Yes, Fossil? You rang?"
I dodge a rogue water bottle while Michael comes back to us. Coach Flessel sighs, pondering of her life's choices, no doubt, and reaches into her bag. After checking if any other dehydrated mammals were loose in the area, she discreetly whips out two movie tickets to a movie Michael and I've been wanting to go to after clips of the official trailer got leaked: Poison.
Before absolutely losing my shit, Michael covers my mouth with a clean rag.
Coach Flessel smirks, "As a leading figure in the gymnasium, I bestow upon you two these tickets due to your high performances this month..! You two alone have made the class average so much higher; academic-wise as well," She hands the tickets over to Michael, seeing as he was much more stable than I at the moment, and says to us as she picks up her water bottle with a light grunt, "Some of your other professors may give you a Lolly and say 'good job' with straight faces and fake smiles, but I'll give ya' two these well-earned experiences." The other boys begin chattering louder as they come closer to get their stuff back. Coach Flessel smiles before adding, "..and just between us," She mutters the last bit, "I like you two better than the mindless cattle coming our way."
Coach Flessel smirked and winked one last time before announcing the rest of the time there was game as long as we kept our bodies moving.
I was still in a bit of shock, but turned to confirm if the phenomenon that just occured was real--
??
I looked around. Where the hell did Michael--
Before confusion began to settle in, Michael jogged back and handed me a cardboard cup full of cold water.
"Sorry, I thought you might've liked some refreshing water after the news," He smiled and downed his water in a gulp.
"So the Poison movie tickets are real? I didn't just make this whole thing up?" We began walking back to the changing room as routine. Michael picked up his bag on the way. I'd left mine in my locker.
"Surprisingly, no, you delusional maniac," When Michael glanced playfully to look at my eyes lighting up, my heart accidentally skipped a beat.
'????' I look down at my chest and clutch it. Maybe my heart's developed a new disease-
"Hey, J?" Michael taps my shoulder and I feel my heart jump up to my throat.
"H-huh?" I answer back through a flushed face and a hazy vision.
"I've noticed you've been kinda out of it since the pace earlier," He points out, concerned, "..you good?"
I should probably ask for the location and time, huh..
"Ah, so," I start, accidentally pursing my lips and looking down. All my confidence had suddenly dwindled in a downward spiral, finally landing in the pit of my stomach. What the hell? He's my best friend, a guy, and I'm getting all nervous asking for mutual knowledge to an event??
I look up suddenly, seeing Liam approaching us with a shit-eating grin on his careless face. My anxiety eases quickly, realising there's a frat-faced predator coming to disrupt our 'comfortable' banter.
"Uhh, what theater should we g--" Just then Michael's phone vibrates to the beat of his ringtone while the melody plays softly. He quickly picks up and mouths a quick, 'Sorry, gotta take this <(^^' ;),' promptly running away. I called a quick whisper after him, half-screeching before he got out of ear's reach, "I'll text you to go over the details..!" to which he nodded and OK'd his fingers.
As I longingly watched Michael's figure quickly disappear behind the bleachers and out the exit, Liam had reached me.
'I still have to text Michael, huh..'
