Wednesday afternoon Dev is walking with Cassidy to the parking lot. She's been quiet all day and now that they're alone she shifts uncomfortably. Finally he stops, frowning. "What's wrong?"

She looks up, eyes wide. "Nothing. I, um, just..." She shifts again. "Mike told me what happened. With Averi."

He stops breathing for a moment, his knuckles bleaching of all color as he grips the srap of his backpack. I can't see the cross today; it's hidden beneath his hoodie. I know he must be painfully aware of its weight, though. He lifts his free hand to adjust the chain.

"I guess that's why you ran out at The Junction," Cassidy continues softly. "I would tell you how sorry I am but I'm sure you're tired of hearing that."

He is. It's one of the many things he tells my photo late at night when he can't sleep.

"I get it. I lost my dad shortly before we moved here. But at least we knew that was coming. I can't imagine what it must be like..." She offers him a somber smile. "I understand if you don't want to join us for Thanksgiving. Honestly, though, I'm hoping you'll say yes. Like I said before, no one should have to be alone."

He stares at the asphalt for awhile then nods. "I'll be there," he swings his backpack around and reaches inside. He rips off a piece of his Physics notes, quickly scrawling something on the scrap. "Here. Text me with a time and your address."

Cassidy looks surprised. So am I. I didn't expect him to agree so quickly. I wonder what he'll tell my photo tonight. "Great. I'll ask my mom and let you know later tonight, okay? See you tomorrow, Devin."

He continues through the parking lot. The moment he's tucked inside the truck, he frowns. "What am I doing?" he murmurs.

It's late when Dev's phone vibrates. He groans, rolling over to grab it. The bright light of the screen makes him wince. 10:36.

Sorry I took so long. Mom says we eat at 5 but ur more than welcome to show up earlier if u want. 1420 Green Lane.

Dev types a quick reply then settles back down. One arm is thrown over his face as he sighs. He turns to the picture on the table. "This is what you'd want, isn't it? God, Averi, I wish I knew." From the pain in his voice, I know this will be another sleepless night for him.
