Poem #14: The True Face

Can I scream?
In the shadows of my mind
Can anyone hear me?
In the broken features in my eyes
Can anyone see me?

Is this what becomes of me
In the aftermath of my failure
No good deed goes unpunished
But it's treasured

I saw the stars in your eyes
A future we would build in time
But here you lay
Broken, eyes wide

Is this the consequence of dreams?
Of wishing for something better
Then a shattered past and fear
Why can't we be those who thrived?

I tried, I tried
I'm sorry

My ambitions led to your downfall
My life led to your death
My world led to yours crumbling
My strength led to yours failing

I thought I was the hero in this story
But now I know that I was the villain all along
